The Battle of Shiloh

The Battle of Shiloh turned Tennessee into the fiercest fighting the Civil War had seen so far. At the battle it cost the Union a close lost over the Confederacy. At Shiloh was a battle that had General Grant, a Union general, at risk. Waiting on reinforcements, Grant’s army stayed under gunshots during a thunderstorm. By dawn Grant received fresh troops from the coming boats.

President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in Confederate teritories and the opportunity for black soldiers in the Union Army could happen. The war to preserve the Union now becaomes a battle for the abolition of slavery.
Battle at Fredericksburg
December 13, 1862
Army of the Potomac under General Burnside suffers a costly defeat at Fredericksburg in Virginia with a loss of 12,653 men after 14 frontal assaults on fortified rebels on Marye's Heights. The Cofederacy lost only 5,309 men. This was another great victory of the South.

The Union captures New Orleans

New Orleans was a very big and important city to the South. The capture of this important southern city was a huge blow to the Confederacy. Southern military strategists were predicting a Union attack down the Mississippi, not from the Gulf of Mexico.

This was because MClellan was not pushing his men hard enough and wasn't agressively attacking the Confederates. He didn't train his men properly, which caused him close battle losses with the Confederacy.
Battle at Chancellorsville
May 1-4, 1863
The Union Army under Gen. Hooker is defeated by Lee's much smaller forces at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia as a result of Lee's smart and risk-taking tactics. Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson is mortally wounded by his own soldiers. Hooker retreats. Union losses are 17,000 killed, wounded and missing out of 130,000. The Confederates lost 13,000 out of 60,000 men.

The Army of the Potomac, under the command of George McClellan, mounted a series of powerful assaults against Robert E. Lee’s forces near Sharpsburg. The morning assault and vicious Confederate counterattacks swept back and forth through Miller’s Cornfield and the West Woods. The Battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest battles ever in the Civil War. Mostly 25,000 men died on each side of the armies.

The end of the Bloody Civil War
April 9, 1865
Gen. Robert E. Lee surrenders his Confederate Army to General Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Grant allows Rebel officers to keep their arms and soldiers to keep thier horses and mules.
June 3, 1864 - A mistake by Gen. Grant results in 7,000 Union casualties in twenty minutes during an offensive battle against fortified Rebels at Cold Harbor in Virginia.

Battle at Gettysburg in Pennyslyvania

The most famous and most important Civil War Battle happened around the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.On the final day, July 3rd, fighting raged at Culp’s Hill with the Union recovering its lost ground. After being cut down by a massive artillery bombardment in the afternoon, Lee attacked the Union center on Cemetery Ridge. But in the end, the Confederates are defeated!
