Second Impact Syndrome: symptoms are loss of eye movement, dilated pupils, coma, and respiratory failure. These can start within minutes of the second hit.

Concussion is a temporary malfunction of the brain that involves actual brain damage

1. Athletes, parents and coaches need to be educated about concussions

Christian Velarde, a junior varsity linebacker, got hit hard in a helmet collision.

~Recieved no on sight medical attention

~Christian's stepfather rushed him to the emergency room, where he was told he could return to sports in 2 weeks.

Joey Hall, a senior linebacker, got hit violently by the opponent.

~He was rushed to the hospital and recieved treatment 20 minutes later.

~Joey was released after 90 minutes with paperwork that said, "May return to sports when able."

2.If an athlete is suspected of having a concussion, then sit them out.

Lystedt Law: Passed in May 2009 in Washington

How Can We make sure Concussions are handled properly?

A Moderate Concussion: result of a second mild concussion at the same event, nausea, most symptoms cleared within 5 minutes.

3.A licensed health care professional must clear the athlete before they return to play.

A Severe Concussion: loss of consciousness for more than 2 minutes, vomiting, and re-occurring symptoms

The National Athletic Trainers Association has created a series of educational DVD's.

~Meant for athletes, parents, physicians and coaches.

~"These educational DVD's will increase awareness of this injury while promoting scientifically sound management guidelines that will help minimize the negative effects of traumatic brain injury."

~ConcussionWise: This is an educational website that has acknowledged how serious concussion injuries are and that they deserve serious attention.

~Established a law mandating high school athletic officials to complete an educational class.

~Goal that by the 2012-2013 school year, the state board or its agency shall require each interscholastic coach to complete training on how to recognize the symptoms of a concussion and how to seek proper medical treatment for a person suspected of having a concussion.
