However, after all the trouble the kingdom endured, in the end, the true king finally reigns and Flagg releases his malevolent grip on Delain, once and for all.

Personal Response

I felt a lot of mixed emotions for the characters and plot in this book. I felt pity for many, such as Roland, Peter, and Thomas, who were all cheated of their health and happiness by Flagg.

Theme

I thought the overall theme of this book was to put faith in your family. The only real enemy in this book wasn't in the family, turning brother against brother to wreak havoc in the kingdom.

EYE OF THE DRAGON

by Stephen King

This quote is important to the book, because it's the reason Peter was imprisoned wrongfully, and also explains the title.

The remainder of the book consists of Peter's imprisonment for an alleged crime, Thomas' short reign as king, and Peter's prison escape, among other things.

It makes it very apparent that the eyes of the dragon mounted on Roland's wall are very important to the remainder of the book.

I found it difficult to relate, since the book deals with many issues I haven't had to face, but I could understand Thomas' jealousy towards his sibling, even though I don't feel it myself towards mine.

"Thomas knew, because he had crept after when Peter took their father the wine last night. He watched through the eyes of the dragon and saw it all."

Quote

The Eyes of the Dragon takes place in the kingdom of Delain, in medieval times. This gives the book an archaic and old-fashioned feel.

Setting

Peter is born first and turns out to be the perfect prince. Thomas, born only a few years after, isn't quite so.

Conflict/Resolution

Plot

The book begins, introducing the reader to King Roland and Flagg. Soon, Flagg finds Roland a wife. They soon produce Peter and Thomas.

This quote gives off a spiteful and jealous tone, due to Thomas' jealousy towards Peter.

Main Characters and Conflict

Roland is the first main character. He is a bit unsteady, and relies on his magician to back him up on many of his decisions.

His heart tasted very bitter to him, and he hated Peter more than ever, although part of him still loved his handsome brother and always would."

The next main character is Peter, the heir to the throne. He's a nearly perfect prince, and the kingdom knows so.

Tone

"He felt as if someone had reached into his chest and cut off a tiny piece of his heart and made him eat it.

He's made his way to the king's ear, so for as long as he's pleased, generation to generation, he's influenced the kings to do his bidding.

Flag brings much misfortune upon the kingdom, all through the king's decisions. He brings taxes, famine, and more, simply because he wishes to see Delain suffer.

In the end, though Flagg escapes narrowly using magic, he is shot with an arrow and disappears from Delain, at least for the time being.

The last main character is Thomas, Peter's brother. He's more like Roland than Peter -- Unsteady and insecure, eventually following in his father's footsteps in becoming king.

Flagg, the royal magician, has a hold over the kingdom. He wants nothing but misfortune for Delain and everyone in it.
