Social Justice Issues In The Greater Toronto Area

The GTA is a great place to live. It is home to over 5.5 million people, but what social justice issues are effecting these people? The main issue is Poverty. One in six children in the GTA are poor and living in deeper poverty. This statistic has stayed virtually the same for over 30 years.

The GTA is over 7124.15 km2 and is home to over 5.5 million people. Do all these people have homes? No they do not . Over 5052 people are homeless, and that's just Toronto. Imagine not having a home imagine not having shelter, this life would be very hard to encounter. Thankfully 3649 of these people live in homeless shelters across Toronto.

Bullying is an issue which most children face. Bullying has many different forms. There is physical, verbal, cyber, and emotional bullying. As many as 70% of all young people have experienced some form of bullying. Bullying is defiantly a social justice issue.

Statistics show the better education you have the more successful your life will be in the future. Do all people attend school? No they do not. Over 8.5% of students are high school drop outs. Education is important because it leads to more job

opportunities and a wider choice of jobs. Therefore, it is correlated with job satisfaction.

Youth under the age of 21 use alcohol more frequently, and with more harmful consequences than any other drug. Problems of alcohol include binge drinking, pre-drinking in advance of going out, hazardous drinking, and drinking and driving. Long term problems include addiction, health issues and even death.

The health risks of tobacco are well known, but kids and teens continue to smoke. 90% of adult smokers started smoking when they were kids. Smoking can cause cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. It increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks.

Unemployment rates in Toronto are extremly high at 10%. The number of available jobs isn't enough to support the number of people in Toronto. You never know if your job is secure or if you are going to be fired or laid off. One person can be laid off many times and lose several different jobs. Having so many unemployed people doesn't help our economy , and it is very difficult to support a family if you are unemployed.

Although women make tremendous contributions to the economy, women's contributions are not valued in the same way as men's. This is, in part, due to society's constructed ideas about the value of women's independence. Although women's rights have improved over the years, men still make more money for doing the same job.

Teenage pregnancy is a very scary issue that has increased over the last few years. Teenage pregnancy causes you to have a lack of money, no extra time, and your grades drop significantly.

What is crime? Crime is assault, burglary, vandalism, robbery, theft and shooting. Crime can cause you to destroy your own life and maybe other peoples as well. Before anyone commits a crime they need to think about how it will effect them later in life. Is the crime you are going to commit worth going to jail or dying over?
