In conclusion, the American Progressive Period catapulted the expressive form of education we have adopted today.

Progressives felt that students should be taught to think critically and analytically instead of accepting a rigid curriculum.

School was meant for the pursuit of knowledge and the American quality of life

A high school diploma became more powerful than a job.

The poor working conditions inspired lawmakers to require everyone to attend elementary school across every state (1920).

Segregated Education

African American children were forced to attend separate schools.

African American schools received less government funding.

The American Progressive Progressive Period was the period of education from 1880-1921.

Progressives are the supporters of the educational reform effort.

They fought for individuality among students, and the freedom in classrooms. Progressives felt that schools should encourage the bettering of society, and teach students to question facts, instead of accepting them.

The main influential factors of this time phase were modernization, business expansion, european immigration, and racial segregation of schools.

Causes for the Events of this Era

  • 15 million immigrants entered the country from Eastern Europe
  • Post Civil War society, so everyone was fairly open minded.
  • The Industrial Revolution took over, but many new city-goers still lacked the basic education and resources necessary for the urban-business lifestyle.

John Dewey

  • John Dewey was a leading voice for the progressive movement.
  • He was a philosopher, psychologist, and writer. He felt that the current classroom was too rigid.
  • Dewey promoted hands-on activities and experiences, and the concept that teachers should guide learning.
