Changes to the Composition of Blood
Hormones
Hormones are secreted by various glands in the body eg. Adrenal glands
The hormones are targeted and absorbed by specific cells in the body.
Describe the main changes in the chemical composition of the blood as it moves around the body and identify tissues in which these changes occur
Nitrogenous Wastes
Chemicals in Blood
There are four basic groups of chemical transported in the blood.
- Gases
- Nutrients
- Wastes
- Hormones
An increase in nitrogenous wastes occurs once the blood passes through the liver.
A decrease in nitrogenous wastes occur at the kidneys where the blood is filtered and waste such as urea is taken out and excreted from the body.
Blood Gases
Blood is oxygenated at the lungs and the carbon dioxide is released from the body. This is called external gaseous exchange
Internal gaseous exchange occurs at the tissues of the body. Where the oxygen is released to the cells and carbon dioxide is picked up
Digestive Products
Digestive end products such as (glucose, fatty acid and amino acid) is increased around organ responsible for digestion. (small intestine).
Digestive end products are reduced at the liver, chemicals such as glucose is converted to glycogen and stored.
