About Phiale Painter
The work of Art of the Hermes and Infant Dionysos, by the Phiale Painter
CA. 440-435 BCE
- Texture- Seems to be very unique in couture of the lining and of course the roughness of the design.
- The Phiale Painter was a painter of the Attic Red-figure style. He was active from around the 460 to 430 BC. The Phiale Painter is assumed to have been a pupil of the Achilles Painter.
- He painted several large chalice kraters, often with two registers of figures; unlike his master, he seems to have preferred larger vessels in general. This is shown by his white-ground works, which are not well known, but more expressive than those of the Achille Painter.
- His themes may be partially influenced by contemporary theater. His preferred name for kalos inscriptions is that of Euaion, son of Aeschylus. His conventional name is based on the fact that a painted phiale, a vase shape rarely equipped with figural depictions, is known from him.
- Material- It seem as if the art piece was created using a small paint brush and overlaying it with protection gel. The art work seem to be put in a lot of patience due to detailing the clothing and the style of the hair chosen.
- Color- It is very easy going red and orange details but with a small amount of white enough to bring the art pieces to light up.
- Technique- It does show Hermes being happy to hold his infant brother and the joyfulness that is happening around him. It also seems like there is a ceremony that is being perform as he holds his infant brother.
