What I Know About Democritus

What I Know About Aristotle

  • Democritus (470 B.C.E-360 B.C.E) was a Greek philosopher in ancient times.
  • He was ofter called the "Laughing Philosopher" for making fun of his fellow citizens for their silliness.
  • He has made a big impact in the art of natural science along with fellow philosopher, Aristotle.
  • He was born in Abdera, Thrace in Greece.
  • He came from a wealthy family though he didn't care about that; he put his heart into traveling and studying.
  • He used his inheritance to travel to Egypt, Babylon, and Ethiopia. In his travels, he has said to met Plato, Socrates, Hippocrates, and maybe more.

Importance

  • Aristotle(384 B.C.E-322 B.C.E) was another Greek philosopher.
  • Just like Democritus, he made a big impact on the art of natural science.
  • He can be called the "Reader and Writer Philosopher" for studying different types of subjects and writings.
  • Aristotle was born in the city of Stargira in Greece.
  • His father Nicomachus worked as a physician and taught him until his mother and father died when he was ten.
  • He attended Plato's Academy by seventeen and left around Plato's death in 347.
  • After he left, he went to Assos and studied marine biology.
  • When at the island, Lesbos, he married the niece of his good friend Hermeias.
  • Her name was Pythias and named his daughter after her mom.

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

- Aristotle

Their ideas are still important because it helped discover many more theories. It was a starting point for many who wanted to question each other's theories. These great Greek philosophers brought many contributions to natural science. Aristotle's contributions were the ideas of elements and later more elements were discovered. Democritus first brought up the idea of atoms and a revolution of theories. Thanks to both of them we can make up our own theories and not be afraid to voice and practice them.

Different Theories

Democritus

  • His theory was later proven right and also wrong. His theory has been over looked for about 2,000. Aristotle dismissed the theory, but did not prove it wrong. It was rejected because he could not prove his idea right.

Aristotle

  • His theory has been proven wrong that the things on Earth are made of out the four elements. The catholic church disapproved this idea and people who agreed would be executed for heresy. His theory was right for about 2,000 years until different theories started coming out and other elements were discovered and was later proven wrong. His model and/or idea was brought up in 340 B.C.E.

Democritus

  • He questioned that if you break a piece of matter, how much pieces would you have to break for it to stop and not break anymore. It ended at the smallest piece of matter. He said the basic pieces of matter are called atoms. His idea came when he started questioning things and began asking questions which led to his theory.

Aristotle

  • He thought the materials on Earth were made out if elements instead of atoms. The four elements were Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. He thought it was made out of each element. His idea came from when he thought Democritus idea was wrong and thought of his own theory.

"It is greed to do all the talking but not to listen at all."

- Democritus

Is There Model Still Here? How Was It Tested?

I would say both ideas/models are still used today because people use their ideas to add to their theories. They use there ideas as preferences for finding a new theory or prove a theory wrong. The part of their ideas/models that are used are Aristotle's full model of elements and and Democritus full model/theory of an atom.

"It is the mark of a educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

- Aristotle

Democritus idea wasn't tested until it started being being noticed after years of being overlooked. Aristotle's model was tested, but they have found more elements. It was tested by more theories proving both either right or wrong.
