Canterbury Cathedral

The Globe Theater

Canterbury Cathedral

The Globe Theater

First, we took a tour of the Globe Theater itself and we were able to walk through the exhibition of the Theater, where there were displays depicting the surroundings as they were hundreds of years ago and some of the incredible history that was made in the original Globe. Then we returned later that day to see a Shakespearean play, in our case Two Noble Kinsmen. It was a very interesting play based on "The Knight's Tale" from The Canterbury Tales. Below are the tickets we received before our entrance to the theater, and they serve as a memento from an incredibly powerful experience.

This is the program for the Eucharist in which we participated at the Cathedral. This distinctive service was moving and remarkable and the unique elements contained in this program contributed to the incredible quality of this experience.

Another incredibly powerful experience was our visit to Canterbury Cathedral, more specifically the church service we attended there. The service included communion, which was different from our ordinary church services because it involved a communal cup. While I was slightly apprehensive along with many of my classmates, I was eager to experience this liturgical service, which was different from any service in which I had participated until that point

One of the most interesting places that we visited was Shakespeare's Globe Theater, which is actually the third Globe Theater to be built in England. The original two Globe Theaters were either closed or destroyed, with this current one having been built in 1997. Anyway, it was truly amazing to witness what is closest to what Shakespeare himself must have seen when his plays were performed there. To be in that space and to experience the history through Two Noble Kinsmen was something I will never forget.

The play we attended was Two Noble Kinsmen. It was a fascinating play inspired by a story from Canterbury Tales, which we had studied in our coursework during the year. To see this performance in such a historically significant venue added depth to the experience and made it truly unforgettable. This picture provides a look at the talented cast, which I would have captured had I been able to do so.

The impressive talent of the choir and the stunning beauty of their music added to the awe-inspiring quality of attending a service in Canterbury Cathedral. While I was unable to capture audio or video during my time there, this picture of the boys choir serves as a reminder of what we experienced there.

Below is one of many pictures I took because I was so eager to capture the history presented in this experience. This is the stage of the Globe, a reconstruction of the historic place on which Shakespeare's plays would have been performed.

This is a photograph I took as we approached the magnificent structure and I was struck by its grandeur.

Our trip to England this summer was most likely the greatest experience of my life. We ventured all throughout one of the oldest countries in the world and stood before countless pieces of history that we could practically reach out and touch , and I will never forget the experience for the rest of my life. A few specific moments, however, particularly stood out to me. These include the Globe Theater, the Canterbury Cathedral church service, and the seaside town of Whitby.

Whitby

Later that afternoon, the grassy hill from which the picture below was taken provided an ideal resting place for a small group of us to relax and reflect on the day's events before going to the restaurant (pictured below) where we spotted the legendary Naked Pizza Dude (If you don't know about Naked Pizza Dude, please see me later for a thoroughly entertaining story).

The next part of the day was the exploration of the town of Whitby. We experienced British culinary culture in the form of fish & chips at the Magpie restaurant and tea & scones at a lovely tearoom. I was pleased to find that I enjoyed the fish & chips more than I thought I would. Spending the day wandering around the city and taking advantages of these opportunities to eat and drink like a native Brit created a particularly significant cultural experience.

Defining Moments in England

Whitby

The day began with an immersive learning experience at Whitby Abbey, learning about Dracula in the shadow of the inspiration for the castle in the story. It was great to hear from Matt, an expert on the subject and an engaging speaker with whom we had formed a close relationship. Below are the notes I took that day as well as the Abbey, the sight of which allowed me to more fully visualize the world of Bram Stoker's novel.

Whitby was by far one of my favorite places in the world to be. The beautiful ocean overlooked by the majestic cliffs right beside Whitby Abbey were some of the most amazing things I have ever laid my eyes upon. My day in Whitby consisted of simply sitting atop a grassy hill, chilling and talking with Matt, and taking in the sights of the city. This is why Whitby is one of my defining moments.
