By Amanda & Nolee

Examples

The main purpose for using coordinating conjunctions in sentences is to make the sentence flow better for the reader. They help make the literature flow easier.

3 Rules to Remember

What is Faulty Coordination?

There are 3 rules to remember when using coordinating conjunctions:

  • Coordinating conjunctions are used to join complete thoughts or clauses. Each "thought" should be able to be a sentence on its own.
  • Put the conjunction in the middle. Some sentences start with conjunctions such as "but" or "and", but is usually wrong.
  • Use a comma before the coordinating conjunction unless the both clauses are short and simple.

When you're creating a compound sentence with a coordinating conjunction, a comma is used to conjoin the two thoughts.

Faulty coordination are coordinating conjunctions used to join independent thoughts into compound sentences. Words such as "and, for, but, nor, or, so, yet" can be used as coordination conjunctions. Using these conjunctions help create simple sentences that are less choppy than two separate thoughts or sentences. The acronym "FANBOYS" can be used to memorize the conjunctions above.
