1. Jeremiah's confrontation with God

4. Objection by the prophet-to-be

Structure of a Call Story

Jeremiah 1:4-10

The Call of Jeremiah

4 The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,

before you were born I set you apart;

I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”

6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’

Jeremiah objects the commands from God because he believes he is too young and will not know what to say when spreading the news of God to the people. Jeremiah needed some growing up before he was fully ready to trust God’s call on his life.

Jeremiah objects once from a personal level and says that his age disqualifies him from fulfilling God’s call to be a prophet.

6. The sign

In Jeremiah's call story, he is confronted by God, himself. Jeremiah is called by God to spread the good news and the word of God to the people of Israel. Jeremiah is told not to doubt himself because as long as God was by his side, he was safe from any harm.

5. Reassurance by God

Call Story of Jeremiah

3. Imparting of a mission

"I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

After Jeremiah hesitated to follow Gods commands, God reassured him by telling him this

7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

Here, God reassured Jeremiah that whatever he does, he'll be by his side and no harm will be done to him. As long as Jeremiah believed in God and himself he will become the prophet of all nations.

In the bible passage, it is clearly evident the mission God had prepared for Jeremiah. He knew before he was born that he was to be a prophet, preaching the word of God to his people. Jeremiah’s mission is to be “a prophet to the nations.”

6. The sign from God

  • Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah, a Jewish priest from the Benjamite village of Anathoth
  • is known as "the weeping prophet"
  • was called to prophetic ministry c. 626 BC.

"And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see an almond branch.” Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.” The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.” Then the Lord said to me, “Out of the north disaster shall be let loose upon all the inhabitants of the land. For behold, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, declares the Lord, and they shall come, and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all around and against all the cities of Judah. And I will declare my judgments against them, for all their evil in forsaking me. They have made offerings to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.”

God's Covenant to Abraham

Historical Prologue

The Submission

The Preamble

The introduction of a biblical story that demonstrates the main purpose and the background of the individual. The beginning Abraham's covenant is God approaching him and demanding him to leave his country, relatives, and his fathers home and land. In doing so, God will give Abraham many descendants that will become a great nation.

Background information that we should know is that when Abraham was 75, he headed out from Haran when he was told to by the Lord. With him he brought his family and everything they possessed to the land of Canaan. Abraham traveled through the land until he encountered a scared tree. Here, the Lord appeared to him and said to him this is the country that i am going to give to your descendants. Then here, Abraham built an altar to raise the Lord and settled.

Abraham and his people are submitting to the Lord because of the promises the Lord God made to them and the faith Abraham instills in God. Abraham also is submitted to God because if he does not he will not be blessed and receive the nations God has promised him. The sign is evident in this covenant is that every boy shall be circumcised to show the covenant is everlasting.

The Blessing

The Witnesses

The blessing Abraham received is the gift of happiness and by giving him a nation and countless descendants, who will be protected from any harm. Abraham's wife who could not bear a child, gave birth to a son.

The witnesses of Abraham were his people, his family, Sarai and his nephew Lot, the kings at the time and lastly his son Ishmael.

Jeremiah's Call Story & God's Covenant to Abraham

2. Introductory Speech

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,

before you were born I set you apart;

I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

The second part of the call story is evdient throughout the encounter between Jeremiah and God. God has told Jeremiah that he was already aware of him before he was conceived in his mothers womb. He already had a plan for Jeremiah and that was to go out, spreading the word of God to the people of Israel.
