The Beginning

The Task

When we started the task we were advised to split up into teams to do different approaches to get trades.

We were tasked with a similar challenge

Two of us went on the computers to speak to our friends on social networking sites (Facebook), While the other three went out around the college to speak to other students to get trades.

We started of with a Mars bar and were asked to swap/trade it for greater items or donations and then choose a charity for the proceeds to go to.

Strength of our team

The Next Step

After we had split up to ensure we had a wider range of possible trades we began speaking to our friends and strangers and after the first day we had made a few trades.......

The Charity

We utilized our teams strength efficiently, We divided into teams as Jacob, Chris and Lewis were confident to confront people around the college they went off to gain trades face to face.

  • Some money
  • Two short books
  • A yellow hooded Jumper

The charity that we chose was Cancer Research. We chose this charity as we each had a person we directly knew that had been affected by cancer.

We then also gained :

A Nike T-shirt, A Slow Cooker and a Ford car radio.

Choosing this charity also gave us some motivation as we wanted to gain reasonable donations for Cancer Research.

Whereas Shea and Tayler used social networking sites to gain trades online as we felt that we could communicate to a wider range of people.

Weaknesses of our Group

Skills we developed

We believed that our group was lacking in external contacts as we did not attempt to contact other people outside of our friendship groups and the college.

Another weakness that our group tended to procrastinate and waste time.

Our Ambitions at the start.

At the start we thought that it would have been a lot easier that it actually was.

We were inspired by the story of Kyle MacDonald and believed that we would gain a much higher standard of trades than we did.

The Easy Part

Confidence

ICT

Communication

What Method proved the most successful

For us the method of communication that proved most successful was social networking sites as that is where we gained the majority of our trades.

At the start we found that we had fairly substantial motivation as we were making the trades for a respectable cause, so motivation came easy.

One red paperclip

What would we change?

We also found it easy when trading up for a Mars Bar but for later trades it became more difficult.........

On July 12 2005 Kyle MacDonald traded a single red paperclip.

14 trades later on July 12 2006 he traded with the Town of Kipling Saskatchewan for a house located at 503.

...The Struggle

After the first few trades it became much harder to get higher quality trades with in the college and our friendship groups.

The main thing that we could have done is asked more external sources, that were outside of the college.

If we were to re-do this challenge we would be less hesitant when approaching people and also use the phones to contact people and be much more persistent

We would also try to use our contacts more efficiently.
