-Rose marries Ted, who is American

-Rose tells her mother they are divorcing

-The divorce becomes the conflict that begins rose's story

Inference:

Although no one directly says it, it is infered dating outside of the chinese race isn't typical, and that was the reason why an-mei wasn't supportive at first. This helps develop the archetype/motif of the strict mom because she is chinese, which is another way the cultural differences are presented

Climax

- Without breaking her promise to her parents, Lindo starts to plot a way to escape her marriage.

You can predict that Lindo is going to escape the marriage and make her way back to America based on her growing determination and urge to abandon the relationship

Climax

rising action

falling action

-Rose comes out of her flashback

-She reflects on Bing"s death and her marriage

-On both occasions she sees things coming but doesn't do anything about to stop it

-This realization is a turning point that causes her to act on the divorce

-Huang Taitai gets upset with Lindo for not producing any grand kids.

-Lindo convinces Huang Taitai, by

arguing that her marriage is rotten, and then

offers proof by showing a empty spot in the back of her mouth where she has a missing tooth.

-Lindo finally starts to sleep in the same bed as Tyan-Yu but he refuses to touch her, which allows her to come to the conclusion that he is still a little kid who has not grown up yet

=Lindo Jong

-Lindo gets enough money and is able to return to America.

Prediction-

At this point the reader can predict Rose will get the divorce. This directly relates to the strong young women archetype rose begins to develop, because she has not been strong in her past.

You can draw a conclusion that Lindo is very attracted by Tyan-Yu and doesn't like this.

=Rose

=Jing-Mei

Falling Action

Initiating event

Rising Action

-Prior to the marriage Lindo vows to herself to not lose her true character and value

-After having escaped her marriage and returning to America, Lindo wears many gold bracelets to remind her of her self worth

- An-mei thinks Ted is with another women, Rose doesn't believe her

- Rose wants to go to a psychiatrist to talk about her failed marriage but an-mei says a mother knows best

- Tyan-yu kicks Lindo out of bed the same night as the wedding, when she gets to the courtyard she realizes its storming and the guy watching over the candles runs away.

-That is important because her jewlery was taken from her by Huang Taitai previously in the book.

- Rose's mom, An-Mei, tells Rose she should try to save her marriage

- Rose thinks back to when Bing died

-She was supposed to be watching him

-she feels guilty and that his death was her fault

*Conclusion

-reader can include that her brother dying had a big impact on Rose, which is going to cause struggles, shown later in the book.

-Lindo blows out one side of the other candle, yet she remains an obedient wife.

Climax

By Lindo trying to blow out the candle, the reader can conclude doesn't want to be married to Tyan-Yu which shows not only how she doesn't like the forced marriage, but also how her determination comes into play.

  • Jing-mei starts to worry and feel stressed because her sisters hopes were up about their mom coming and she knows that she wont be there.

We inferred her sisters were going to be disappointed and jing- mei didnt want to get their hopes up, shortly before the novel confirmed this inference

Initiating Event

Falling Action

- Ted sends a $10,000 check to rose for their divorce settlement

resolution

Exposition

-Lindo's parents stop treating her as their daughter,

but as Huang Taitais daughter.

- Ted sends a $10,000 check to rose for their divorce settlement

- rose is offended because he signed it with a pen she gave him that he said he would only use it to sign important documents

Rising Action

-Lindo's family moved to Wushi and left lindo behind to join the Haung household.

-Once every year, Lindo takes off her bracelets to feel the lightness come back and remind herself the day she learned to follow a genuine thought

- she is being forced into marriage/treated poorly, but she is determined to honor her family.

  • The three mothers urge Jing-Mei to get into contact with her long lost sisters
  • Jing-Mei Questions if she can meet them because shes scared she won't be able to tell them who her mother was

The reader can infer about the culture of China, and how forced marriages weren't abnormal, but can also see the chinese strength in Lindo as she is determined and strong in order to live up to her family's expectations

Falling Action

  • Jing-Mei is nervous to meet the twins because she fears they won't accept her
  • Character development: This is the start of seeing cultural differences because Jing-mei isnt as strong and brave as her mom
  • We could infer this because the clear difference of bravery in strength between Jin-Mei and her mom.

Exposition

Resolution

-Jing-Mei wakes up to her dad explaining her moms story to his aunt

-She feels better about going to see her sisters after talking to her dad

-She falls asleep thinking of her moms courage

*Archetypal Development:

This chapter shows Syuan is a Strong, independent mother and adds to the motif of the archetype of a strong mother.

*Inference:

At this point you can infer that although Jing-Mei throughout the book had difficulty seeing that her mother just wanted what was best for her, the reader can conclude her dad telling Jing-Meiher mother's sacrifices, now Jing-Mei sees that, which can give her closure.

- Rose finally speaks up and tells Ted that she can't be thrown away

- Ted and Rose get divorced

-Roses story begins by discussing how her mom no longer has faith

-The bible is worthless to her, so she uses it to prop stools up and clean the floors

Question/Conclusion-

Something must've happened for her mom to lose faith. What happened?

Initial event

  • Suyuan abandons two daughters in China trying to escape the war
  • Suyuan dies and leaves Jing-Mei a letter informing her that her to sisters are alive and want to meet her

Archetypal development:

This is the start of the motif that the Chinese mothers are so strong and devoted to do whatever it takes to give their children a good life. The reader can draw this conclusion because Suyuan clearly left her daughters behind for the bettering of them.

REsolution

  • She informs her long lost sisters that Suyuan has passed away
  • Jing-mei tells the twins about their mother and who she was
  • Suyuan's final wish comes true and the three daughters and father get the closure they need

Exposition

-Jing-Mei's mom dies

-Three other moms are introduced through this

-They want their own daughters to learn of their own lives like they are urging Jing-Mei to discover her moms past

At this point we predicted Jing-Mei was eventually going to find them for her mother and her mother's friends.

Overall, these plot lines all build to create one storyline, between the four mother's and their daughters. Every plot connects to the archetypal motif that the Chinese mom's have experiences/characteristics of being strong, determined, independent, and selfless women for their daughters. The main idea of the entire novel is the bond and relationship they have, despite the Chinese versus Chinese-American cultural conflicts. By the end of every Chinese-American daughters story there is at least one time where they either see their mom within themselves or the reader sees how their strengths and independence is evolving. The predictions, foreshadowing and questions every page leaves you with, allows the reader to see the slow development of the daughters as the book progresses.
