Apache : The Black Spirit

In the beginning, there was nothing ,but darkness water and moving wind. Nothing lived except for the eternal spirits. These Spirits had great power. The strongest of these spirits was Black Hacticn. Together he and all the spirits made the Earth, yet he alone made all the birds and animals that lived upon it. One day however , Black Hactcin announced that he couldn't stay for ever, so all the animals begged him to make someone similar to Hactcin to take his place and keep them company. So Hactcin ordered them to go gather materials from around the world to make man. When they were gathering all the materials, Black Hactcin turned them into man. Yet when man was made, the animals asked for Black Hactcin to make someone to accompany man and so he did. He told man to dream of a companion and put man to sleep. When man awoke, his companion, woman, was sitting next to him. Since Hactcin's work was done , he left man in

charge and left. Together, man and woman did everything together and ruled over the animals.

Black Hactcin and Man

Black Hactcin and Man didn't, in all honesty, didn't have an amazing relationship. In fact, I would barely call it love. It was more of a respectful relationship. Man was thankful for being created by Hactcin and Black Hactcin was trustful of man. There was respect for each other but there wasn't really any love between them, even thou man was created in the image of Black Hactcin.

Bierhorst, John. The Mythology of North America. New York, William Morrow and Company.

1975. This book contains facts and mythology from all Native American cultures. It

even has all four of the Apache tribes: Mescalero, Jicarilla, Western and Chiricahua. It

goes on to tell how the Jiracilla Apache Indians are the only of the Apache to have an

emergence story. Additionally, it talks about how this single myth affects their culture a

great deal. When reading these three pages, I received the most all-around information

from this book in particular. It was the best reference for this assignment.

One thing that was greatly affected by the myth in the culture was the Jicarilla believe the were made to protect nature. They believe they were made of nature, by nature, for nature. In the end they, believe that man is supposed to protect and accompany all life on Earth. The Jicarilla Apache Indians also believe that woman were made soley to accompany men and produce offspring.

This lengthy passage has full details on the Jicarilla Emergence Myth. From the creation of birds and insects, to the muddy creation of man, this article details it all. It explains exactly how the animals were made and how they helped gather materials for making man. The article even goes on to talk about how man came to the over world and the old were left behind in the underworld. This reference is a great site for learning about the Jiracilla Apache Indian Creation Myth.

-The Jicarilla believe when you die, you go to the Underworld, not necessarily Hell, to live with the old and dead.

Min, Sheila. The Dawn and Dusk of Man. THINK Quest. 15 August, 2003. January 2004.

<http://library.thinkquest.org/03oct/00875/text/ApacheC.htm>. In this article, you are given a more summarized version of the Jicarilla Emergence Myth. It helps you mainly to point out the main points of the Myth rather than the full thing would. As a contradiction, it’s short length makes it to seem as though it doesn’t provide enough information, when in fact it does. Using other articles, in comparison to this one, make it stand out clearly as a summary.

The jicarilla believee men are the rightful leaders of the world.

The Jicarilla believe they were made to protect Earth and all it’s life.
