Accoring to Courtney Mazzerina and Kelly Olsick "Living in a time period with such a low grade of technology there were many other
medical problems that the colonists had to deal with. Because most of them were not knowledgeable about medicine or how to care for themselves in a healthy manner, many times they would usually believe any sort of concoction or remedy they would hear of or read about in the paper." Some STDs can have severe, life-changing consequences; syphilis, for example, can eventually cause massive destruction of the brain and spine, leading to mental trouble and hallucinations, speech problems and general paralysis. During the 18th Century Doctors would treat Syphilis with salves or even bathing. But others made tea from Guaiacum or holy wood that the indians used.
Whether called the pox, the French disease or morbus gallicus, the Spanish sickness or the Spanish itch, the evil of Naples or the Neapolitan disease, or very simply the venereal infection, syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections plagued the early modern people.
Indeed, venereal diseases were so widespread, devastating, and stigmatized that people sought to name the disease after enemy countries to which they ascribed the disease’s origins. In the 18th and 19th centuries, mercury, arsenic and sulphur were commonly used to treat venereal disease, which often resulted in serious side effects and many people died of mercury poisoning. Because of the stigma around STD's many would seek help in the beginning but would wait until it was to late for help. All the while exposing partners to the disease as they went along. We still have Syphilis today, it has not be completely destroyed since it has come to be. Syphilis can be cured with the right antibiotics. However, treatment will not undo any damage that the infection has already caused. Today Syphilis is easy to treat and does not last long in the body for we have discovered that according to the CDC Benzathine penicillin G (2.4 million units administered intramuscularly) will cure Syphilis. If in the late stages three doses are required to fully kill the disease. "Syphilis Treatment and Care." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
