According to the ANA: "Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations" (ANA, 2014).
Patient-centered care: The patient is the priority. Be respectful and supportive of the patients (and their family) preferences, needs, and values. Standard of care is continuous and customized to the patient. Care is provided in a safe and healing environment. The interdisciplinary team is involved in the patients care. Provide holistic care.

Communication is the mutual sharing of information, not just talking and listening. Share information in ways that others understand may require you to adapt your style so that others can understand you. Consider the situation and how others will react. Use verbal and nonverbal communication skills to express the message, to help people understand, to help them feel at ease, encourage questions, look for clarification, and be an empathetic listener.
Use open ended questions Don't be afraid of silence
Use exploratory statements Record information
Avoid leading questions Be open minded
Use body language Repeat
