Attributes of a Great Nurse

Nurses follow core competencies developed by the Institute of Medicine and by QSEN (Quality and Safety Education of Nurses' ).

When I think about the qualities of a good nurse I think about what we have learned in this class. Being empathetic, being detail oriented, being an effective communicator, developing intuition, having physical endurance, being emotionally stable, utilizing critical thinking skills, being able to coordinate care, being patient, and being dedicated.

As professionals our goal is to improve patient outcomes, showing care when working with people, and being effective in our patient care. Always strive for quality improvement and always be patient centered while providing the best care possible using evidence based practices.

Gain the knowledge , skills, and attitudes needed to improve the quality and safety of patients, families, coworkers, facilities, and communities.

What is Nursing

According to the ANA: "Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations" (ANA, 2014).

Patient-centered care: The patient is the priority. Be respectful and supportive of the patients (and their family) preferences, needs, and values. Standard of care is continuous and customized to the patient. Care is provided in a safe and healing environment. The interdisciplinary team is involved in the patients care. Provide holistic care.
