In 1836 Texas was a part of Mexico. Many Americans settled here because the land was cheap. Although they tried to stop the Americans from living in their land they simple could not.

After Texas got its freedom from Mexico a majority of people voted on Texas joining the United states as a state where slavery was allowed.

At the time slavery was not legal in Mexican-Texas. But the Americans brought over slaves that worked on things such as farming. The Mexican government was not happy about this.
