A Quick History of the ATF...

1789-The ATF's history begins here *(Not the ATF then)*

1789 to 1794- Taxes Imposed Rebellions start

1862- Office of Internal Revenue Begins

1919- 18th Amendment

1933- Prohibition ended

1952- Alcohol Tax Unit is renamed to Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Division

1968- Alcohol & Tobacco Tax Division renamed to Alcohol, Tobacco, & Firearms Division

2003- ATF Transferred from Treasury Dept. to the Justice Dept.

ATF's Future

Duties & Functions

Deal with Criminal Cases that involve alcohol, tobacco, firearms & explosives.

Functions

  • Very Thorough And Extensive with investigations

  • This is when evidence is collected, so it can later be analyzed.

  • Analyzing evidence and data is the next step.

  • After analysis, conclusions can be drawn and an arrest can be made if necessary.

After the application is submitted and ALL test and requirements are met and completed, wait, you may be called back for a second interview and get hired.

Retirement Plans:

  • At 50, if an agent has served 20+ years he/she is offered early retirement. However, they can choose to work longer.
  • If 20+ years have not been served, the requirement age to retire is 57.
  • 57 years of age is the mandatory cut off for agent, an agent must retire then.

Work Schedule

  • Mostly 8:30am to 5:00pm (Monday through Friday)
  • However schedules can change due to the number of cases and their priority.
  • Overtime and Night Work becomes a part of the work schedule if there are many cases or they are high priority cases.

Pay (Salaries):

  • How much an agent makes is based on their ranking.

  • The top pay for a G-13 is $71,674 to $93,175. (On Average)

Rankings are based on Grade and Step.
