Darry Character Analysis

How Do Other Characters Feel About Darry?

Other characters like Ponyboy have immense respect for Ponyboy. He fully understands that if it wasn't for Darry he would have to work two jobs, do the housework, and cook everyday. He's strong, principled, very serious, often grumpy, and can get violently angry at times in the book.

Darry struggles with a lot of things, but he struggles the most with his anger. In the book he would become violently angry at times in the book. Pony tells us in the book that one time Steve made a joke and called Darry "All brawn and no brain", Darry nearly shattered his jaw. Pony was never a fan of how he would become angry at times, he felt that he was never understood by Darry.

Something Darry faces is trying to accept the loss of both of his parents. He often struggles which is the reason he gets angry. Darry has to realize that he is the father now and he should act like one for his two younger brothers. If he can do that it will help him move past and get over the sadness of the death of his parents.

1) "Where the hell have you been, do you know what timeit is? It's 2:00 in the morning, kiddo!" This shows that Darry is really concerned and helps show Pony that he is a father and he sets rules and you must follow and respect them.

2) "And i can't even call the cops because you two would be put in a boys' home so fast it would make your heads spin."

My Reaction To Darry

After reading the book I liked some things about Darry and I also didn't like some things about him. I like that later on in the book he matured and became a father. But I don't like how he got angry and took it out on Pony most of the time. In the end Darry showed me how to be a good father and role model. I really enjoyed my character analysis of Darry.

Darry Positive Character Traits

One positive character trait Darry represents is responsibility. Darry shows that he can be a responsible father by working two jobs, cooking, and doing housework. This is showing Ponyboy a great example on how to be responsible. And remember Darry is only 20 years old.

Darry Negative Character Traits

Darry has one negative character trait that really stands out, it is his anger. Darry would often become violently angry at times in the book. Pony often gets upset when Darry gets upset and yells at him. He feels that Darry dosen't care about him and he never listens or respects him.

We first meet Darry, when he comes over to rescuse Ponyboy during the fight. He says " Are you all right, Ponyboy?" Since Darry is the oldest in the family, he feels that he should protect Ponyboy. Darry's role in the story is to work and support the family. He has to work two jobs and do the housework and cook. He was forced to be the parent when both of his parents died in a car crash.

Darrel also known as Darry, is a muscular and well-built man due to his years of playing on the football team. Ponyboy describes Darry as looking very similar to his father, so much that many people mistook them as brothers instead of father and son. Darry does differ from his father with his eyes, in the book they are descirbed as "pale blue green ice". He is also very tall standing at 6 feet 2 inches.
