In this experiment I found out that the type of material used for a parachute does make a difference. The trash bag parachute had more air resistance and fell slower. The results confirmed my hypothesis.

After doing this experiment, I would look to see if the size of the parachute or the size of the strings or the amount of strings would make a difference in my results. Another thing to look at would be the shape of the parachute; would a circle work better than a square or rectangle?
The graph shows that the news paper fell the fastest. Also that the bandanna was the second fastest and the trash bag was the slowest out of the three homemade parachutes.
The newspaper parachute fell quickly and straight down. The egg had a little crack. The trash bag parachute went down the slowest and flew a bit to the side. The egg landed softly and was fine. The bandanna parachute glided down but fell faster than the trash bag parachute. It also flew a bit to the side. The egg did not crack. The graph on the next page shows the times it took the parachutes to come down.
What is the best material for a homemade parachute?
You will need:
- parachute string,
- tape,
- scissors,
- ruler,
- stop watch,
- trash bag,
- newspaper,
- bandanna,
- eggs (3),
- ladder,
- roof , and
- assistant
First, measure the height and width of the bandanna with a ruler. The bandanna I used measured 20.5 inches on each side. Next, you spread the newspaper on a table and measure the height and width to 20.5 inches. Cut the newspaper and set aside. Do the same for the trash bag. Next, use the ruler to measure the parachute string to 20 inches . Cut 12 pieces making sure they are all the same size. Cut 12 pieces of tape and put them at the edge of the table. Spread the bandanna on a table and place a string on each corner. Tape the string to the bandanna making sure that it sticks. You then pull the strings making sure they are even and you tie a knot. You then place an egg on the bottom of the string and tape it to the string making sure the egg is secure. You do the same for the newspaper and for the trash bag parachutes.
Once the parachutes are ready, you go outside. Put the ladder next to the garage. Have a person hold the ladder as you carefully climb up to the roof of the garage. Have a person ready with a timer to measure the time it takes for the parachute to land. Take the first parachute and spread it out and then throw it up in the air. The person with the timer will write down the time. Do the same for the other two parachutes. Carefully climb down the ladder. Inspect each parachute and check the eggs.
Imagine you're in a fighter jet flying sky high and your engine starts to fail. You eject and fly out of the jet and now your falling to your death. Suddenly you remember that you have a parachute and then you land safely.
Some people have had to depend on their parachute to save them from their death, but most people don't even know what it is made out of. Parachutes are usually made of nylon, silk, or other materials. That is why I've chosen to see what is the best material for a homemade parachute.
I believe that if we use a trash bag and tie an egg to it then it will not break and fall as fast because the trash bag will hold up air and slow the egg down from falling fast and not crack.
