  • benchmarks are the intended learning

I know how machines confer mechanical advantage in order to make work easier.

•assessing the intended learning show that we are accountable to the learning objectives … it is part of our PLEDGE to parents and we take responsibility for it

•benchmarks (learning objectives) dictate the type of evidence we’re looking for … benchmarks help us design the learning experience

•assessments also measure effectiveness of instruction, which could lead to adjustment of instruction

  • We should assess the intended learning … behavior and homework are not part of assessments (HW is an instructional strategy)
  • assessment is a way to BUILD-UP (not penalize), GUIDE (not blindly hoping) and INFORM (data)

  • assessment is essentially a feedback process!

To truly appreciate feedback we need to understand learning

•TAKE NOTE

Feedback is a corrective process

Feedback is different from retrieval

Marzano’s loop … incorrect retrieval / corrective feedback / still no learning … what is missing? Another retrieval opportunity – WITHOUT PENALTY!

Feedback addresses specific learning objectives and is corrective (removes misconceptions)

Feedback is the floating principle

Feedback is essential if learning is the goal

Duh?

Huh?

Ouch!

Aha!

Hmm!

FEEDBACK

• The neurosciences have revealed the following key areas before real learning occurs

o we can only learn in CHUNKS

o access prior knowledge

o input new knowledge

o practice with new knowledge

o self-assessment

o FEEDBACK is essential … did they learn it OR NOT

o guide towards a refined understanding (apply feedback)

o 2nd opportunity for retrieval … now students are really learning! Give them an extra opportunity to act on the feedback

o THIS IS MARZANO’S LOOP

• This is the greatest educational innovation of all time … effect size of 1.13

ALIGNING ASSESSMENTs TO BENCHMARKS

Effective Teaching

  • Establish curriculum guides
  • Develop course units
  • Employ/apply instructional strategies
  • Assess student learning
  • Routinely collaborate with teachers to examine student work to inform instruction and improve student learning

Teachers ... as a means to provide a quality education (while discipling young people) ... engage in a collaborative standards-based instructional delivery system
