Hester the main character committed adultery in the beginning of the book. She gave birth to a child with a man that was not her husband. She is forced to wear a Scarlet letter on her chest until she dies.

Hester feels guilty for committing adultery with a minister. She also feels the guilt when her daughter, Pearl asks about the letter. Hester does not want to tell her daughter of her sins, but at the same time she does not want to lie. So she never tells Pearl the real reason and feels guilty for that.

feels guilt throughout the book, he

does sin. In the

beginning he lies about who he is.

Through the entire book he seeks

revenge on the man that committed

adultery with Hester. He is also not to

nice to Pearl. When he finds out the

culprit, he planned to reveal him to the

whole town.

The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter is about a woman named Hester Prynne who committed adultery with a man that is not her husband, and minster Dimmesdale. She is forced to wear a Scarlet letter on her chest until she dies. When her husband returns he vows to find the culprit. Hester, her child and minister Dimmesdale plan to run away to Europe together. After the election sermon Dimmesdale confesses to his sins and dies.

The People of the Town

Arthur Dimmesdale feels the most guilt throughout the book. Throughout the book he would whip himself to punish himself. He would always hold his chest because he felt like the "Scarlet Letter" was on his chest. At one point of the story Dimmesdale goes onto the scaffold and confesses to the town his sins to express his guilt. However, nobody is awake to hear him.

Arthur Dimmesdale sinned when he committed adultery with Hester Prynne. The father of Pearl was only officially announced at the end of the book. The audience knew that he was the father of Pearl and the one who committed adultery with Hester Prynne.

THE END

The people of the town continue to judge and criticize Hester and Pearl even when they themselves sin everyday. Even though no guilt is felt by the people sin is portrayed in the people.
