Origin

Latin was spoken, during the Roman Empire. It was also spoken at the "Península Ibérica" (Iberian Peninsula). This peninsula, nowadays, is formed by two countries: Portugal and Spain. Centuries passed by, and, due to the massive use of Latin, imposed to the original inhabitants of the peninsula, this language changed and became into Vulgar Latin. This "Latín vulgar" received a lot of new words from other cultures, like the Germans. Other influences were taken from Celtic and Arabic languages.

THE EVOLUTION OF LANGUAGES IN EUROPE

Spanish language has its origin in Latin language. Languages like Latin, Germanics, etc, come from the Indo-European Language, which is the "mother" of many of the languages spoken nowaday.

Approximately 406 million people speak Spanish as a native language, making it second only to Mandarin in terms of its number of native speakers worldwide. It also has 60 million speakers as a second language, and 20 million students as a foreign language. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and is used as an official language by the European Union and Mercosur.

In Spain and in some other parts of the Spanish-speaking world, Spanish is called castellano (Castilian) as well as español (Spanish), that is, the language of the region of Castile, contrasting it with other languages spoken in Spain such as Galician, Basque and Catalan. Castilian is the official Spanish language of the State. The rest of the Spanish languages shall also be official in their respective Autonomous Communities.
