What Happens to the Ankle?
Special Tests: 3rd degree Ankle Sprain
- Instability
- Dysfunction
- Limping
- Loss of ROM and strength
- Severe pain in ankle
Immediate
- RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
- NSAIDS (Ibuprofen, Aspirin, etc.)
- Crutches
Rehabilitation
- 4 Stage Treatment Program(RICE, ROM exercises, Physical therapy, Exercise with resistance
- Surgery and cast might be necessary
Inversion Stress Test
- Positive Indicator: ROM in adducted position
Anterior Drawer Test
- Positive Indicator:Anterior translation of the talus away from the ankle mortise that is greater on involved side
Outside
Inside
- bone is uninjured, but ligaments around bone suffer
- most commonly tear Anterior Talofibular (ATF) Ligament, Posterior Talofibular (PTF) Ligament, or Calcaneo Fibular (CF) Ligament
- can tear deltoid ligamnet (least common)
- Improper Footwear
- Previous Injury to Ankle
- High-arch Foot
- Muscle Weakness or Imbalance
- Landing Wrong when Running or Jumping onto an Uneven Terrain
