Hippocrates moved to Athens, Greece from the island of Chios. There are two main theories why he moved there. One is that he got robbed by pirates when he was sailing in his boat. This theory suggests that he was going to Athens so that he could go to court with these pirates. The other main theory is similar. It says that Hippocrates got his ship robbed by corrupt customs officials and went to Athens to get a trial. Both of these theories say that Hippocrates was kept waiting a long time for his trail so he decided to just stay in Athens. We do not know for certain but this is probably why Hippocrates moved to Athens.
One of Hippocrates' greatest mathematical accomplishments was squaring the lune. This means that he was able to construct a square with the same area as a given lune (crescent shape). This used a lot of complex mathematics that I do not understand. What I do understand is that the main flaw of his work on the problem of squaring the lune was that it did not work on every lune.
Hippocrates' Geometry textbook is probably what he is most recognized for. It is called Stoichia (The Elements). He was the first person to create a systematicaly ordered Geometry textbook. Four other mathematicians also took infomation out of his book a century after his death, including Euclid.
Hippocrates was a Greek mathematician. He was born on the island of Chios in 471 B.C. He died when he was 60 years old in 411 B.C. Hippocrates went to Athens, Greece and ended up staying there. While he was in Athens he made his major mathematical accomplishments. He created the first systematically ordered Geometry textbook and learned how to square the lune.
Hippocrates was a great mathematician of his time. He learned how to square the lune as well as making the first systematically ordered Geometry textbook.
When Hippocrates' got to Athens he was still a novice at Math, but while he was waiting for his trial he learned a lot about Geometry and other types of Math. He even learned about Astronomy while he was there. I think that Hippocrates stayed in Athens because that was where he could create a carrier in Math the easiest.
