Standardized Testing Can Be Detrimental
If students are required to continue to take standardized tests, they should be able to have their own notes. Students could be prepared ahead of time for material on the test. Teachers should be teaching note taking skills, and give practice tests. “Note-taking is way of remembering what we were taught or what we've read about.” (3) Note-taking helps trigger a part of your brain to remember those topics. Practice tests allow students to know what they need to work on before a test, and allows/critiques the students before the tests.
Taking a test and failing can be detrimental to a student`s future. Certain tests determine which college they can go to. If a student experiences test anxiety, this could negatively impact the potential of going to a specific college. Students may end up not getting the job they want all because of poor performance on a test. That is one more reason as to why we shouldn’t have standardized testing. The only things these tests help with is telling how well our teacher is teaching us.
The pros and cons for standardized testing. The first argument I have is that the states spend billions of dollars a year, just to give kids a test. In 2002, the money spent on testing increased from 423 million to 1.1 billion dollars. The money we save from not testing could be put to school lunches or other school needs. This testing doesn’t improve the children’s achievement. In math, the U.S. slipped from 18th to 31st in the world`s education rankings. In my opinion, that is just an outrage. If students are going to take this test, I think we should just do one at the end of the year every year. Additionally, students should also be allowed two note cards of notes per class, to make use of what we have studied. Standardized tests are not very reliable because they have no long term affect on learning. I am even more discouraged about this test is that non-English speakers and Special Needs students must take the same test as a child who can speak English without any disabilities.
Students should not have standardized testing. They take too much time for students to complete. I personally see absolutely no point to these exams. We could learn more without taking time to do tests. There are more reasons why we shouldn’t have standardized testing.
According to Gerald W. Bracey, standardized tests cannot measure “creativity, critical thinking, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, self-discipline, leadership, civic-mindedness, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, sense of beauty, sense of wonder, honesty, and integrity.”(4) I think every one of these qualities needs to be measured. Some are more important than others. There are a lot of aspects tests don’t cover that need to be evaluated. There are schools that allocate more than a quarter of the school year on test preparation. The money being spent could be used toward learning new subjects of importance. Finally, reproducing a lot of tests doesn’t help our environment. We are using approximately 1% of a tree for one test.
Remember, people can have test anxiety. Taking a test and failing can be detrimental to the future for a student. Finally, I feel strongly that we should not have standardized testing. I strongly urge you to consider eliminating these tests!!!!
Indications of test anxiety can be fear of failure. A good definition for test anxiety: tests create a state where a student would be more nervous than they should be. Experts have stated “ While the pressure to perform can act as a motivator, it can also be devastating to individuals who tie their self-worth to the outcome of a test.” (1).
Students need to find the motivation within themselves. According to professionals “The key symptoms of test anxiety are: 1. Students feel tests are more of a threat than a challenge. 2. Students have a lot of worrisome or negative thoughts about what might happen if they do poorly. 3. Students worry about other people scoring higher than them on tests, or leaving the room before they do.” (2) Test anxiety can lead to panic attacks. These are a few symptoms or reactions and events that could result from test anxiety.
