Embryonic stem cells are grown from cells found in the embryo when it is just a few days old. They develop into each of the more than 200 cell types in the body.
The primary roles of adult stem cells in a living organism are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found.
Although adult and embryonic stem cells can differentiate, adult stem cells are limited to which kinds of cells they can become, while embryonic stem cells can become any cell in the body.
How would stem cells be used in Jim's treatment?
In Jim's case, if they decided to go ahead with the treatment, he would get an experimental treatment using an injection of human embryonic stem cells into the site of the damaged nerve cells
Spinal cord injuries are complex, and involve different kinds of damage to different types of cells
injected embryonic stem cells will go and replace the different types of dead or damaged cells
Based on the advantages and disadvantages of Stem Cell Treatment...
in accordance with my own personal beliefs and morals...
I, personally, would not go ahead with the treatment.
I would not be able to justify taking an innocent child's life, just to better my own. If you decide to go along with the treatment, you are giving the doctors the order to make the miracle of life happen. You are also giving them the order to kill that child. And I would never be able to live with myself if I did that!

- Potential benefits of stem cell research are numerous and range from development and testing of new drugs to cell-based therapies in which stem cells are used to replace ailing or destroyed cells.
- If we continue to research and try experimental treatments we doctors and scientists will get more knowledge to make the future better.
- The success of stem cell treatments could possibly drastically affect many people's quality of life and even prevent some from dying.
Advantages of Using Stem Cell Treatment:
cell differentiation is the process by which a less specialized stem cell becomes a more specialized cell type

- The use of embryonic stem cells involves the destruction of 5 to 7 day old embryos, which has raised moral and ethical issues.
- There is a risk of immunogenic reaction as stem cells from a random embryo donor are more likely to face rejection after transplant.
- The stem cells can trigger cancer or tumor formation after being treated with embryonic stem cells.
Disadvantages of Using Stem Cell Treatment:
