How do you add depth?

Perspective

How else could you show depth & form?

Filippo Brunelleschi (an architect & engineer) is credited with rediscovering linear perspective, but the ancient Greeks and Romans are considered the first to have known about it.

How else could you show depth & form?

Creating the illusion of deep space on a flat surface.

1. Change the contour lines to give a sense of form.

3. Use the picture plane & perspective.

As a class, use the following shapes to create forms.

* Objects farther away = Higher on picture plane + smaller size

Objects closer = Lower on picture plane + larger size

2. Use a light source, value & shadow.

vanishing point

Straight ahead of the viewer, where everything seems to vanish. It matches the eye-level of the viewer.

  • Circle to Sphere
  • Triangle to Cone (or Pyramid)
  • Square to Cube
  • Rectangle to Cylinder

horizon

line

Where the sky & earth meet. Vanishing point usually sits on the horizon line.

orthogonal lines

Edges of an object that show how far back the object goes. They always point to vanishing point.

Dimension is the structure of space.
