CHAVIN

ZAPOTEC

OLMEC

This standing figure is a classic example of

Chavin art. Historians cannot tell exactly what time this piece was made, but they know that it was sometime between 900 and 200 BC. It was created by a Chavin craftsman for purely artistic purposes. Historians do not believe that this figure represents a deity. Rather, they believe it was created to study the human body. It is currently located in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. This piece is a perfect example of Chavin art because of its realistic features and humanistic motifs.

Art

Art was a major factor of Olmec culture. This object most likely represents the portrait of an Olmec king. It is unknown who created this artwork as it is not marked to show the name of the artist. This piece was dated around 600 BC. It is characteristic of Olmec art due to its massive size and attempt at facial proportions. This piece is currently located in the city of San Lorenzo as a monument to this civilization.

This photograph shows the main temple

in the Chavin's capital city of Chavin

de Huantar. It is a perfect example of the sophisticated architecture created during this time. This city was built around

900 BC by Chavin tribesmen. It was the religious, cultural, and economic center for the Andean region. Not only was it used for religious purposes, but it also housed many people. It is located in Peru near the city of Huaraz. Its stone architecture, at times simple or ornate, vividly portrays Chavin culture as the last remnant of this once great civilization.

Architecture

The pyramid shown in this picture is located in the ancient city of La Venta in Mexico. Because of its name, the structure is known as the La Venta Pyramid. It was created around 500 BC and is the earliest known Mesoamerican pyramid. It was most likely created by the citizens of the area as a ritualistic site to bury offerings or bodies. Though years of erosion have worn it down to a hill, historians believe that it once looked like an Egyptian step pyramid.

Architecture

This sculpture is a perfect example of

Zapotec art. It was created sometime between 300 and 600 AD by a Zapotec craftsman. Historians believe that this sculpture was made in the capital city of Monte Alban. After being passed down to many people, it is currently located in the Orlando Museum of Art. It is a great example of Zapotec art due to its modern and stylized features. The object probably represented a Zapotec god and was used as an urn.

Art

This photograph is a vivid display of

Zapotec architecture. It shows the ancient capital city of Monte Alban in Oaxaca, Mexico. This city was constructed during the 700s BC and flourished for more than a millennium. It was a political, social, economic, and cultural center for all of Mesoamerica. Historians believe that this city was built by Zapotec tribesmen who used the area for housing and religious purposes. With its characteristic pyramids and stone houses, Monte Alban is one of the most significant areas in regard to Mesoamerican culture.
