How Bohr's work affects us today

Biography

  • Bohr determined that electrons were placed in energy levels. This determination is still used today.
  • The energy levels contain two electrons (at level one), up to eight (at level two), up to ten (at level three ), and up to sixteen (at level four).
  • The electrons are placed in the energy levels based on their quantum energy.
  • His model served as a platform of the current model, which is only slightly different from his
  • Born on October 7th, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark
  • Went to Copenhagen University and received a master’s and doctorate in Physics
  • In 1912, he married Margrethe Nørlund and proceeded to have six children
  • In 1922, won the nobel prize for his atomic model
  • He worked on the Manhattan Project, which focused on creating the first atomic bomb.
  • In 1954, he created CERN, a physics research facility
  • Established the Atoms for Peace Conference in 1955, and let won the Atoms for Peace Award for his patronage of atomic energy saftey.
  • He died on November 18th, 1962 from a stroke; one of his sons went on to be a physicist as well

Atomic Model

  • Studied Rutherford's model, which said that electrons travel in orbit
  • Created his own model which stated that electrons travel in an orbit, like planets, around a positivley charged nucleus of protons and neutrons
  • Every level of the orbit has different energy levels
  • Discovered that electrons can "shift" between energy levels but never in between the orbits
  • When electrons move to lower energy levels, they emit light
  • The outer most orbit determnes the element

What is Atomic Theory?

atomic theory-the theory that all matter is made up of atoms. According to the modern version, the atoms of each element are effectively identical, but differ from those of other elements, and unite to form compounds in fixed proportions.
