How do we make brighter or darker areas?
We are starting a new unit of science in which you will be engineers who study light and sound. Today you will learn what light and sound engineers do.
Model asking questions. Scientist and engineers ask question. Sometimes, new questions come from thier observations.
Turn to a partner. Take turns sharing what you observed and your new question.
Lesson 1.2
Show Pictures from page 41. Stop and ask questions to describe the observations.
We use the word "problem" a lot. When we have a problem with something we call it a problem. The word problem has a lot of meanings. When we are talking as student engineers about making designs for the puppet theater. The puppet company has a problem. Who remembers what the problem is?

What we know about Light chart
Think about 3 kinds of places we found in the book. A bright place, a dark place and a completely dark space.
How do we make darker or brighter areas?
Partner talk:
Are there places so dark that you can not see? What words would you use to describe this place.
We are going to learn about how we make some areas darker and some areas lighter. If we are going to solve the puppet theaters problem we will need to learn more about light.
We looked at a lot of pictures with different light and dark places. Today we are going to focus on this question.
Dark activity
Observing a dark place
How could we make the classroom very dark?
Dark Vs completely dark
What makes something bright or dark?
