A symbiotic relationship that the Ponderosa Pine has, is with the Abert Squirrel. The squirrel is dependent on the trees branches or stands. in the winter the squirrel eats the inner bark.
The Ponderosa Pine is located mostly in western North America. The range in where it grows stretches from Canada to Mexico. And from Nebraska to the Pacific Coast.
The Ponderosa Pine tree is about 235 ft tall and 324 in around. The Ponderosa pine is a coniferous evergreen tree. It's bark separates it from other species of pine trees. The younger pines have a reddish brown bark.
The Ponderosa pine can withstand the hot and dry climate where it lives. To get water the pines seedling develops a taproot. This is a large tapering root that grows downward and connects several plants together. The pines roots go six feet down. These huge pine trees can soak up 400 gallons of water per day. The Ponderosa Pine can withstand extremely high soil temperature, but can be easily killed by a heavy snow.
The Ponderosa Pine protects itself using its needles. These needles contain several compounds, that are stored in intracellular compartments. This helps the Pine because when a n animal chews on the the neddle, it crushes the compartments. Then phenols mix with other compounds in the cell. An animal can eat a needle but it wouldn't get any nutrients. There are also other compounds in the needle that dirupt the metabolism of some herbivores.
