Gaspar de Portola was born in the year of 1723 at Balaguer in the province of Catalonia. As a young boy, he joined the army and soon rose to the rank of captain of dragoons in the Espana Regiment.
Portola was declared governor of Baja California in the year of 1767. Three years later, he got sent to go on his first expedition. In all, Portola made three expeditions.
He represented Spain for all three expeditions. His goal for his first expedition in 1769, was to determine were Monterey was located. He also wanted to name some points along the adventures. Another goal was to establish some missions.
Portola's accomplishments as an explorer was naming a few unknown points, founding the first two Spanish Presidios (San Diego and Monterey). Mission Dolores was built and he discovered San Francisco.
Sadly, he died in cancer in 1784. He was then 46 years old.
