The Kind of Friends We Used to Be

Music Play list- Marylin

Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel-For the First Time in Forever

Randy Newman- You've Got A Friend in Me

Kelly Clarkson- Because of You

Tonight imagine me gown and all

Fetchingly draped against the wall

The picture of sophisticated grace

Ooh! I suddenly see him standing there

A beautiful stranger, tall and fair

You've got a friend in me

You got troubles and I got 'em too

There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you

We stick together, we can see it through

I will not make the same mistakes that you did

I will not let myself

Cause my heart so much misery

I will not break the way you did,

Joan Jett- Fake Friends

This song portrays Marylin's more childish side. She wishes everything could be like a love story. It almost seems like she's afraid to face reality sometimes.

Marylin has Kate's back no matter what. They been through a lot and are still friends. So what better way to describe them with a song from the 1950s film Toy Story. These two are basically the girl version of Woddy and Buzz Lightyear.

Losin friends, losin friends

Ya got nothin to lose

Ya don't lose when you lose fake friends

Marylin's parents have just gotten a divorce, and even though she doesn't show it she's hurt. All she wants is for her parents to fall back in love. Although she doesn't say it I think she refuses to make the same mistakes her parents did.

Mazie, one of Marylin's cheerleader "friends," is no friend. Everything she does for Marylin benefits herself. For example, she made her run for student council just so the cheerleaders could get new uniforms.

The Veronicas- Popular

Dove Cameron-Better in Stereo

When I walk into the room people stop and stare

It's like nobody else is there

You know it's me not you

Who said anything about you

Marylin McIntosh

"You–the other half of me

The half I'll never be

The half that drives me crazy!"

Marylin is a middle school cheerleader obsessed with her appearance and popularity. Marylin wishes life was like a fairytale where fairies would come and whisk her away. However she hides this because she is too afraid to speak her mind. To sum it up, she is the complete opposite from her best friend Kate Faber.

This song is an example of what people expect Marylin to be. They expect her to be stuck up and only care about herself, but that describes Mazie more than it describes her. Marylin is quite the opposite of this, she is nice and pleasant to be around.

This is basically Marylin's song to Kate. The lyrics talk about how you'll never be your best friend, which is true for two opposites like Marylin and Kate. Marylin loves bubbly, upbeat songs and would most likely be caught singing this song anywhere.

Kelly Clarkson - Mr. Know it All

One Republic- Secrets

When somebody tells you something 'bout you

Think that they know you more than you do

So you take it down another pill to swallow

Tchaikonsky: Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy

Alicia Keys - Brand New Me

I need another story

Something to get off my chest

My life gets kinda boring

Need something that I can confess

It's been a while

I'm not who I was before

You look surprised

Your words don't burn me anymore

Been meanin' to tell ya

The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is similar to Marylin's personality. She is a bit on the girly side, and she definitely believes in fairies. She wishes she were in a fairy realm instead of 7th grade.

Unlike in Kelly Clarkson's song the know it all in Marylin's life is Mazie. Mazie tries to tell her what she should do and how she should act. Most of all Mazie trie sto tell Marylin who she should be friends with, and Kate isn't on that list.

Marylin has lots of secrets. For example, her obsession with fairies and how she enjoys student council. She has started to tell hers secrets to some of her close friends that she trust, which is why this song is perfect for her.

Towards the end of the book it starts to seem like Marylin doesn't care as much about peoples judgements on her. She doesn't care if she's caught hanging out with the school's "loser" Rhetta any more. It's almost like she's a semi-brand new person.
