In 1801, Andrew Jackson was elected colonel of the Tennessee militia, and later promoted to Major General. In the War of 1812, an Indian tribe leader named Tecumseh ordered the Red Sticks to attack White settlers in Georgia and Alabama. 400 settlers were killed in result. Never actually serving duty or leading troops, Jackson jumped onto the battlefield, commanding the US Army, Tennessee Militia, and the Cherokee and Choctaw tribes. Jackson was victorious, killing 800 Red Stick warriors and giving mercy to the chief.
After his success in the War of 1812, the British threatened to attack New Orleans. Jackson took charge, and on January 8, 1815, Andrew Jackson won with 5,000 troops against 7,500 British troops. After his victory, he earned the nickname "Old Hickory" for being as tough as hickory wood on the battlefield.

"Life of Andrew Jackson" by James Parton
In December 1817, Jackson was ordered by President James Monroe to lead into battle against the Seminole Indians. Jackson was also in charge of preventing Spanish Florida from becoming refuges for slaves who had run away. Jackson's solution was to conquer Florida. Since the Seminole attacked Jackson's troops, that left their villages vulnerable. Jackson then set fire to the their houses and crops. While searching the village, Jackson found letters that said the Indians were being helped by the British.
After finding out that the Indians had the British's help, Andrew Jackson seized Pensacola,Florida, and killed its Spanish governor. He then found the two British people who had been supplying the Indians with supplies and executed them. These actions terrified the Seminole Indians as they heard about it. After taking control of a state that was a foreign country's territory, this caused an international dispute. Afterwords, the Spanish minister demanded that Jackson be punished, but John Quincy Adams defended him, saying "Spain must immediately either to place a force in Florida adequate at once to the protection of her territory ... or cede to the United States a province, of which she retains nothing but the nominal possession, but which is, in fact ... a post of annoyance to them."
After finishing his military career, the Tennessee legislature nominated Jackson to be President of 1822. The election of 1824 was also known as the "Corrupt Bargain." Although he lost due to John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay basically cheating, Jackson did win the election of 1828 and again in the election of 1832. Throughout his presidency, Jackson was successful in many things such as the spoils system, opposition of the national bank, and fixed the nullification crisis.
Starting at age 13, Andrew Jackson had already started working in the military. During the American Revolutionary war, Jackson entered the army as a militia courier. After the Battle of Stono Ferry, Andrew and his brother were captured as British prisoners. While imprisoned, Andrew Jackson was commanded to clean a British Major's shoe. After refusing he was slashed on the back with a sword, making Jackson hate the British even more.
