Central Idea:
The science and DNA of whales help them survive.
Lines of inquiry:
1. Whales have different adaptations to help them survive
2. DNA in marine life is important to survive the different enviroment
3. There is lots of science behind caring for a whale or a marine animal
Baleen whales feed on crustaceans and when global warming melts the ice the krill are exposed to predetors and easily over hunted by the predetors.
There are many different types of marine biologists.
- Ichthyologist: someone who studies fish
- cetologist: someone who studies whales
- microbiologist: someone who studies microscopic organisms
Whale Sences
Most marine mammals have a sixth sence. They have the 5 sences that we have...
- Smell
- Sight
- Taste
- Touch
- Hearing and echolocation
Echolocation is more like touch than sight. The dolphin sends out a sound like a click from near its blowhole. The sound wave travels to the object in front of the dolphin, bounces back, and returns to the dolphin's lower jaw where the dolphin sences a detailed picture of what the object is in front of it.
Basic Facts about whales
- Length varies up to 110'
- weight varies up to 150 tons
- lifespan 20-40 yrs.
some 80 yrs.
Here's what to do:
- Educate yourself about oil spills, pollution, and whales and then help them with the things you have learned
- Recycle and use the money to donate
- Join organizations and take part in fundraisers

Whaling
How does whaling affect whales?
whaling is when people kill whales for their oil, meat, or their bones. Recently, there have been 1,400-1,500 whales being killed because of whaling each year. (illegal)
Flukes
What is a fluke? A fluke is a whale's triangular shaped tail.
A fluke is also the name of the triangular arrow that whalers use to stab the whale near the base of it's tail and capture it.
Cetology
What is Marine biology?
Marine biologists study animals and plants that live in saltwater. In cetology you study 80 species and how whales live.
What kind of education do you need to be a Cetologist?
To be a good cetologist you should be concerned with whales plus, want to learn more about them. Also you should have a mathimatic/computer science background and have experiance.
Making the Sea Sick
In the ocean, there is waste that is clumped up in there is also oil in the water that can get on animals and prevent them from doing what they need to survive.
What kind of marine scientist are there?
How does global warming affect Whales?
You don't need to be a cetologist to help right now!
