What was their problem and why did they want to go?

But, they were not alone....

•First built a crude common house

•was like an English cottage with interwoven

twigs patched with clay-had barely translucent

windows

•Cannons on wooden platform on hill

•Then devised design of settlement

•Streets with parallel alleys and a cross street

•Easily defended structure(devised by Captain

Miles Standish

•Two rows of houses for safety

•four common buildings

•One was a small fort like structure called

rendezvous

•houses built along road running down Fort hill to the sea

•It was intersected by "high way" running from north to south down to town brook

•settlement developed along intersection

•Slow progress in building due to high death toll

How did they design their settlement?

Design

The Mayflower Compact

•first written framework of government established in what is now the United States

•drafted to prevent dissent amongst Puritans and non-separatist Pilgrims

•Drafted even before the they landed at Plymouth

•The compact created a "Civil Body Politic" to enact "just and equal Laws, Ordinances, Acts, Constitutions and Offices."

•Every man signed it before going ashore

The Separatists

At last they start to go on the shore of

Plymouth Rock, little by little

Wampanoag Tribe

-The Wampanoag, or Pokanoket tribe neighbored the Plymouth Colony

-inhabited the southeastern portion of present-day Massachusetts, the islands off its shores, and the eastern part of Rhode Island.

-competent farmers, fishers, hunters and gatherers

- established system of government and religion

- Children learned from their parents about their future adult roles as individuals and their responsibilities to the community

-But, it was a while until they had a true contact

and exchange with each other.....

The May

Government and Leadership structure of the Plymouth Colony

•It lacks a formal royal charter-unlike most colonies

•They only had a land patent from the New England

Council, which was a private corporation

•So, they initiated their organization of a government and legal structure by formulating a self-declared "combination" in which the necessity of forming a "civil body politick"

•Also, the pursuit of the "Glory of God" justified the government's authority

•The law was a mixture of English laws and Mosaic law

•They elected "several assistants" and a governor

•The governor was elected annually by the General court.

•General Court had legislative and judicial function

•However, legislative matters needed the vote of freemen

•Still, governor had a lot of power because he had the authority to do things such as summoning the General Court into special sessions, presiding over the Court when it was in session, and deciding votes in the event of a tie.

•The Governor also possessed the authority of a judicial officer, and possessed the powers to arrest and commit persons to jail

Plymouth Colony

The Pilgrims.....

Who were they?

Relation with Natives

Peaceful Relationships

Natural Features of the Plymouth Colony

Erosion of Relationship

-Land disputes started to

break the relationship

-the Natives started to

think that the small items

that the Europeans paid

for land did not match the value of land.

-These tensions later lead to the King Phillips

war.

-Squanto and Samoset reassured

the Wampanoag tribe that the

Pilgrims were not dangerous

people.

-In March, they arranged a peace

treaty between the chief, Massasoit

and the first governor, John Carver.

-This treaty also benefited the tribe; the fear of European weaponry allowed them to assert dominance of other small tribes in the south

-They tilted land together, and they had the famous first feast of Thanksgiving, in October of 1621.

Samoset

and Squanto

Climate

-Squanto was kidnapped in 1615

and was taken to Bristol-he returned

First they feared

the Indians.. there

was no direct contact but they noticed that they were being watched..

•the ranges of temperature are 68

in the summer and 27 in the

winter

•Harsh winter that killed off many

people

•It is considered humid

•cod, trees, whales, game,

sand, gravel,

stone, lime, and clays

for natural resources

-They followed John Calvin's Teachings

-Discontent with Church of England's

inadequate Protestant Reforms

-Wanted to Separate from the Church

-Left to Holland for Religious Freedom

-After decade, afraid of "Dutchification" of Children

-sought America as the ideal place to

preserve heritage and practice religion

later in 1619 with captain Dermer

-Samoset was Sachem of a tribe in Mohegan Island, Maine, where he had learned to speak a little English from his contact with the fishermen and traders who visited his island each year.

-Samoset first opened the conversation between the two cultures

-He returned later with Squanto, who conducted almost perfect

English

-He taught the pilgrims how to find herring, a kind of fish, and to use it as a fertilizer when planting corn, pumpkins and beans.

-Significant because the seeds they had brought with them from England did not do well in the New England soil.

-Showed them how to find clams and eels in the rivers and how to hunt for deer, bears and turkeys.

-Taught children where to find nuts and berries of all kinds.

Geography

-

•rolling hills, fertile valleys

•knob and kettle terrain

•small ponds in the kettles

• good harbor

•many springs for drinking water

•Swamp

•Indians had cleared off a lot

of the land

Trade Relationships

-They also had extensive trade relationships

- Rugged cutting steel blades, farming tools, trim clothing, warm blankets, glass and metal containers and ornaments that no stone or shell work could duplicate-all these were available for trade

-In exchange, the colonists got trade-plenty of pelts and a surplus of land

Planning Phase

-Original plan was to settle in

South Virginia

-Had contract with London Company

-Guaranteed civil and religious rights

-Bought the Mayflower and Speedwell

-They were ready to roll.....

Issues that they faced

Disease....

•Disease took a heavy toll on the

colonists

•Once there were only 7 people

to tend the rest

•More than half of the people became ill

and died

Starvation

•They arrived at winter,

so they weren't able to plant

much

•They didn't know much about the terrain

•The crops they brought didn't grow well..

•Starvation also contributed to the death

of many people...

Indians...

•The colonists were in constant fear of the Indians

•They heard all sort of rumors about the brutishness of Indians

•They often saw a couple of Indians observing them

•They made a fort and placed cannons on it because of the fear.
