The narrator lives in a rough neighborhood, and almost everyday he hears gunshots. On a certain day he heard multiple gunshots and a young boy was shot. The narrator did not help the boy, and the boy died.

The narrator understands that it was ultimately his fault for the death of the boy. The narrator could have saved the boy if he chose to take action instead of doing nothing
From the title we can conclude that the poem is about a murder or death.
Death: While it was the boy that was shot and died. It was the narrator that took the toll of the death.
