Sterilization kills or destroys all microbes and is generally not required for nail or hair services, but it is required for esthetic (skin care) services. By law, a hospital grade disinfectant is required. This is usually only used in the medical/dental field. There are three methods of sterilization.
-Through bacterial filters
-Heat sensitive liquids
-Toxic Gasses
-Gas penetrates into material
-Similar to steam
-Autoclaving
-Heats up & builds pressure inside
-Temp goes above 212 degrees
-20 minutes
-Then vented
Disinfection is the second level of decontamination. Disinfection destroys/kills most but not all microorganisms. All implements and tools must be sanitized and free of debris before disinfection. Disinfectants are agents able to destroy microorganisms, applied only to inanimate objects .
Sanitation is the first level of infection control. Sanitation methods clean and reduce microbes. When we sanitize, we are killing the one-celled vegetable micro-organism we call bacteria. There are two different types of bacteria. They are pathogenic bacteria, which are harmful, and non-pathogenic bacteria, which is non-harmful.
Low level disinfectants can kill vegetative bacteria, some fungi and some viruses in a practical period of time (less than or equal to 10 minutes).
An example of a low level disinfectant is chlorine bleach.
We sanitize things by washing them but sanitation will not destroy some spores and viruses. We need to make sure we wash our hands for a good 20 seconds with soap.
Intermediate level disinfectants kill vegetative bacteria, most viruses, and most fungi but do not necessarily kill bacterial spores.
An example of an intermediate level disinfectant is Barbicide.
High Level Disinfectant
* Provide hot and cold running water.
* Sanitize shampoo bowls before and after each use.
* Wash your hands! Liquid soap is recommended since bar soaps can harbor and transmit microbes.
* Empty waste receptacles daily.
* Wear clean fresh clothing.
High level disinfectants kill all microorganisms except large numbers of bacterial spores.
An example of a high level disinfectant is many types of alcohol, even though they are rarely used in salons.
*Provide clean restrooms that are well stocked with toliet tissue and paper towels.
*Never place tools, combs, rollers or bobby pins in your mouth or pockets.
*Use freshly laundered towels on each client.
*Dispense all semi-fluids and powders with a shaker.
Make sure that you are practicing sanitation, disinfection, and sterilization procedures daily in the salon. It's worth the time if it prevents you, a coworker, or a client from getting infected!

Why do we need to practice it?
Although sterilization procedures are not commonly used in salons, they are used by electrologists. They use needles that puncture the skin. For example if an electrologist does not sterilize their tools, they are at risk for transferring infection from one person to another.
Why do we need to practice it?
If disinfection procedures are not practiced, the salon could recieve a very serious fine. For example, if you drop a comb and do not let it sit in a disinfectant for the correct contact time, you could be putting others in danger of infection because the disinfectant did not have time to work.
Why do we need to practice it?
If sanitation is not practiced, you could get a client or coworker infected. For example, if you come into work with a cold and are not frequently washing your hands, you could easily spread germs throughout the salon.
There are three main levels of infection control. The lowest level is sanitation, then disinfection, and lastly sterilization.
Disinfection is the process of cleaning implements/tools of microorganisms that can be harmful.
Sterilization is the most effective level of infection control. Sterilization kills and removes all pathogens.
Sanitation is the process of making things clean to make it healthy. Also, it is the process of keeping places free from dirt , infection , and disease.
