Type of Mixture: Colloids

Contain some particles that are intermediate in size between the small particles in a solution & the larger particles in a suspension.

Activity

  • With your table partner: compare & contrast solutions, suspensions, and colloids

  • Draw a picture, table, venn diagram, concept map, etc. comparing & contrasting these three types of solutions on your own paper.

  • Make sure you & your partner's names are on the paper.

Matter & Mixtures

CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER

Pure Substance

Uniform composition throughout that does not vary from sample to sample

  • element
  • compounds

Mixture

Homogeneous

A blend of two or more kinds of matter, each of which retains its original properties

Heterogeneous

same throughout

different throughout

What is an atom?

Atom: smallest unit of an element that maintains the chemical identity of the element.

Element: pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances and is made of only one type of atom.

Compound: substance that can be broken down into two or more elements chemically.

How big is an atom?

By the end of class you should be able:

Differentiate between atoms, elements, and compounds.

Distinguish between a pure substance & a mixture.

Type of Mixture: Suspension

Heterogeneous mixture that separates into layers over time.

Type of Mixture: Solutions

Uniform mixtures where one or more substances are dissolved in another substance.

Two Parts:

1. Solvent: the substance doing the dissolving

2. Solute: the substance being dissolved

What is the solvent in salt water?

What is the solute in salt water?
