Acts of Deception

Polonius and Laertes

  • Polonius is deluding Laertes
  • Laertes is in France and Polonius wants to see what he acts like when he is not in Denmark. He sends a servant to observe Laertes, he is to do whatever Laertes is doing.
  • Appearance- His fathers servant is bringing him money and checking on his welfare.
  • Reality- Polonius doesn't trust Laertes and wants to know all of the dirty details of Laertes whereabouts.
  • Laertes is not told the real reasons of the servants visit, otherwise he would not act honestly upon his arrival.
  • You shall do marvelous wisely, good Reynaldo, Before you visit him, to make inquire of his behavior.

Polonius and Hamlet

  • Polonius is misleading Hamlet
  • Hamlet has appeared to have gone mad, Polonius thinks it is from love sickness because he has told Ophelia(his daughter) not to receive Hamlets affection. Polonious stages a conversation between Ophelia and Hamlet while he listens inconspicuously.
  • Appearance- Ophelia is having an innocent conversation with Hamlet in which she returns his affections
  • Reality- Polonius listens to see if Hamlet regains his senses with the prospect of love
  • Polonius does not tell anyone but Ophelia, Claudius and Gertrude because if Hamlet found out, he would not be himself
  • 'Lord Hamlet is a prince, out of thy star;

This must not be:' and then I precepts gave her,

That she should lock herself from his resort,

Admit no messengers, receive no tokens.

Which done, she took the fruits of my advice;

And he, repulsed--a short tale to make--

Fell into a sadness, then into a fast,

Thence to a watch, thence into a weakness,

Thence to a lightness, and, by this declension,

Into the madness wherein now he raves,

And all we mourn for.

Polonius scene ii

Hamlet and Claudius

  • In this Act of Deception, Hamlet is deceiving Claudius
  • Hamlet wants Claudius to admit to his guilt for killing his father, so he creates a short play reenacting the murder. Hamlet has Horatio watch the king to see if he reacts during the play.
  • Appearance- A short play
  • Reality- Actors portraying the murder of the king
  • Hamlet only discusses his intent with Horatio with whom he trusts completely. He does not want other people to think that he suspects the King of murder until he has proof.
  • The play's the thing,

Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king.
