Summary
Puritan Children
Life in the 1690's
Puritan children were expected to act orderly and well behaved. They attended church every Sunday and did the same amount of work that adults were expected to do. Children could take up apprenticeships with local craftsmen to learn a trade and better the community. There was a high literacy rate among children although the only books they could read were the bible or other books teaching proper behavior. (Unknown, Life in Salem during the 1690's)
Two separate communities existed, Salem Village and Salem town. Lower class people and farmers lived in Salem village. The farther away from Salem town you lived the less money you possessed. Puritans viewed new worldly manners and customs as being influenced by the Devil. The Church was the focal point of the puritan society and was extremely strict. Also during this time the Salem witch trials became prominent. (Unknown, Life in Salem during the 1690's)
