The Man Your Man Could Smell Like

Introduction

This Old Spice commercial went viral in 2010.

“The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” starring Isaiah Mustafa, who was a NFL practice squad wide-receiver before this ad. He plays the role of a "real man".

The ad uses a wide array of marketing techniques to sell the bodywash to its targeted audience.

Target Audience

Mainly 20 to 40 year old female and males

Young to middle aged people

Target Market: men

Visual & Textual Language Interpretation

"Hello, ladies, look at your man, now back to me, now back at your man, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped using ladies scented body wash and switched to Old Spice, he could smell like he’s me."

Although the marketing demographic is men, at the beginning of the commercial, Mustafa addresses women, building his ethos by comparing their men to him.

Then he builds up his credibility and sets the stage for his argument.

Hidden Message

  • It targets female viewers although the product is for men.
  • The product also has the idea of being a “desirable man”, for the women that are addressed by him.

Marketing

  • The title is smart, witty, blunt, and attractive because it draws in the viewers especially females.
  • It uses props such as diamonds, a yacht, a knight on a white horse, and tickets to your favorite show, that are eye catching, to reel in potential buyers.

Anything is possible when your man smells like Old Spice and not a lady. I’m on a horse.

Look down, back up, where are you? You’re on a boat with the man your man could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an oyster with two tickets to that thing you love. Look again, the tickets are now diamonds.

Bias

There no real gender bias, which is effective because its target audience, (men) can also be influenced by their female counterpart.

However Old Spice uses gender stereotypes in the commercial.
