In most of my students' digital projects they had to record their voice to show their thinking. The same assignment varies so much from student to student due to their knowledge but also their creativity. Students can show their understanding of prefixes and suffixes by creating a comic strip.
A good amount of the students projects are with a partner to help them work together through sharing, planning, and creating. They are forced to discuss their knowledge and find a way to show it together through a digital project.
Seesaw allows students to see the work of their peers. In addition, parents and relatives share their support to further student success in their learning. Even as a teacher, I can add in praise and encouragement on student digital projects.
"My husband and I appreciate that our daughter is getting valuable hands-on experience with technology and learning skills that will benefit her throughout her life. Seesaw helps my husband and me see firsthand what our daughter is working on in the classroom. I love the way Seesaw helps her synthesize ideas; it is evident that she must decide about ideas, plan, rehearse, and the create her Seesaw projects. She is not just hearing the once -- she is hearing it, contemplating. forming ideas, asking questions, applying knowledge, and showing the end result in an electronic format. It is great that we can interact by leaving supportive comments and feedback on her projects." - Jill Anderson
Students continue to show their understanding through creative ways with apps like Strip Designer where they create comics on homophones!
Checking students' digital creations on Seesaw, as a teacher I can assess students on their understanding through student made diagrams, videos, and recordings through multiple apps.
Students created Public service announcements using Puppet Pals, PicCollage, and then uploaded it to Seesaw to share with family members. One of these videos was selected to be shared with the school board.
Seesaw allows students to record their thinking when creating a digital creation. As a teacher I can hear if they truly understand the concepts taught such as area and perimeter or the contributions of Ancient Greece. Students are not showing their understanding through multiple choice tests, but rather through their own voices. The best way to learn is to teach.
- An app where students can document their learning by adding digital creations to an online portfolio.
- It is easily accessible from any device
- Worked can be shared with parents and family, classmates, and the teacher.
- Compatible and linked to many other apps
I love how Seesaw allows me to see and hear my student's thinking as they explain and review concepts taught in class.
SEESaw gives students a real audience
- Easy to assess and bring home since it's available on any device
- Motivating for students
- Their learning is shown throughout the year (review if needed)
- Easy to use for students, parents, and as a teacher
I am continually impressed with this app and how it has easily allowed me to open up a window of my classroom to parents. Furthermore, the positive results I am finding from my students encourages me to continue its use and find new ways I can incorporate student learning through more apps and now the Seesaw blog. I am proud of the growth I've made as an educator in regards to the amount of technology use in my classroom.
However, I am continuing to learn more and more as this technological era in education furthers and deepens. The majority of times we used new apps in my classroom was not a success, but rather a learning experience. I've learned to have students plan out what they are going to say rather than deleting their audio and doing it multiple times. I've discovered my students sometimes catch on to the tools in the apps before me and that I really need to study the apps more before testing them out in class. Moreover, students need more time and practice with the app before moving on to a new one. I started using Google classroom in late January and for awhile did not use Seesaw. I see this gap in my students' digital portfolios which reminds me to make my technology use a more common and consistent part of my classroom.
