American High Society of the 1920's

Presentation by

Jennifer Hudson

Movies became an increasingly popular activity among both the upper and middle classes, almost simultaneous with the industry's near complete relocation to Hollywood, CA.

...Which also led to the beginning of the inevitable, a previously unseen infatuation with celebrities (both actors, musicians, and popular sports figures.)

The 1920's were a time of great American fortune and huge inequalities. We were a nation trapped by the values and culture of the late 19th century, and struggling to be free of them.

The wealthy, who had usually inherited their money and had never had to really work, could no doubt afford to indulge themselves with lavish parties, fancy cars, and late nights out.

Between 1921 and 1924, the country's gross national product made a jump from 69 billion to 93 billion.

We had entered WWI in debt and had come out of it with 12.5 billion to show for it.

America was rich, for the moment, and it showed.

Many enjoyed luxuurious lifestyles, but the wealth was not distributed equally.

The white middle and upper class of the 1920's enjoyed the highest standard of living in the world at the time; frolicking in the blessings of consumerism.

"The American Dream" had become to be rich, sucessful, and to live as extravagantly as one could.

The Upper Class of the 1920's sought pleasure without guilt.

The values of an earlier generation gave way to self gratification and sexual fulfillment.
