Albanian Rebellion in Macedonia

By: Samantha Juncaj

When did it happen?

The Albanian Rebellion in Macedonia started in 1999. But when the war initially started was on January 22, 2001. The war lasted until August 13, 2001. It ended with the Ohrid Framework Agreement. The first attacks took place in a small village called Tanusevci, which is located in the northern part of Macedonia. Additionally, it is located near the border with Kosovo. The war broke out when a group of Albanians that were armed attacked a police station. The police station was located in a place called Tetovo. During this attack, only one police officer was killed and three people were injured severely. This attack was caused because the Macedonians were against the interests of the Albanians in Macedonia.

Long Term Causes

One very important and crucial long term cause of the Albanian Rebellion in Macedonia was the fact that Albanians weren't given the same rights as Macedonians. Albanians were enraged of this because even their flag was banned of being used. Additionally, the Albanian language was repressed or not allowed in the Macedonian country. This caused several protests and riots to occur. Basically, Albanians were repressed of their rights in Macedonia. This is a situation similar to how the African Americans in the South were treated, except the Albanians weren't being enslaved.
