In Conclusion

Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld was one of the most extraordinary heroes that Europe saw during the Holocaust. He put himself in danger to see that Jewish children, men and women were safe and able to make a living.

Over 3,500 people owe Schonfeld their lives for his selfless dedication to ensure the safety and well-being of these people. As dark as the Holocaust may have been, as much sadness and despair as it cultivated, Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld gave several thousand people hope, and a second chance at life.

Helping Those Who Are Persistent

  • He even went to great lengths to save the life of a 17-year-old-boy while he was only rescuing children
  • The boy, Marcus Retter, had heard of Schonfeld's great work and wrote to him several times in hopes of gaining passage to London, where he could later save his family
  • Steinfeld disagreed with this, claiming that the younger children were more important
  • However, through the means of persuasion, Schonfeld was able to convince Steinfeld to allow Marcus to come to England, where he had the chance to live a better life

What He Did

More Than Just Children

  • Solomon Schonfeld was one of the most incredible, and least-recognized heroes of the Holocaust
  • He was a British Rabbi who went to great lengths to save thousands of Jews from German-occupied Europe
  • It is believed that he saved about 3500 lives from Central and Eastern Europe between 1938 and 1948, nearly tripling Schindler's own numbers
  • Not only did Schonfeld save hundreds of children, but he also brought thousands of rabbis, teachers, ritual slaughterers, and other religious functionaries to England
  • After rescuing these people, he would assure that they had kosher housing and helped them to acquire jobs in Jewish education
  • As WWII began, Schonfeld struggled to provide for the children at the Yeshiva
  • Though the times were difficult, with Steinfeld's help, he was about to pull through and continued his rescue missions even three years after the death of Hitler

Saving the Children

  • He and Julius Steinfeld arranged for kindertransports from Vienna to London
  • These kindertransports collectively rescued around 750 Orthodox Jewish children and took them to study at a yeshiva (a Jewish school)
