Conclusion
This topic was so fun to research and learn about. When I first started researching this topic, I didn't know anything about it. I didn't know that there were so many different kinds of drugs that athletes use. Some of my research was kind of difficult. Many websites were blocked so my options were limited at school but I ended up finding lots of information. I had a lot of fun learning about this topic. And I learned a lot of new things
What are steroids?
- There are two types of steroids, Anabolic steroids and Corticosteroids
- “Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling.”- physiatrist Kenneth Mautner, MD, of Emory University
- The anabolic steroids abused by athletes are synthetic versions of testosterone, a male hormone. Both men and women naturally produce testosterone
Pro#2 Positive effects of drugs
Con #1 The negative effects of taking drugs
- Androstenedione- Allows athletes to train harder and recover quicker from strenuous workouts
What do I want to learn?
- Adverse effects can include acne, hair loss, testicular atrophy and changes in personality, including aggressive behaviors
- Human Growth Hormone-Only available by prescription and is administered through injections. (nothing good about this drug!)
- What kind of drugs do professional athletes use and for what purpose?
- Erythropoietin- Taken by athletes to increase the movement of oxygen in muscles
- Why do athletes use drugs?
- Creatine- It is sold over the counter and is used to help the muscles release energy
- These behaviors can include “steroid rage” and “roid rage,” an inappropriate intense anger response
- Which sport players are more likely to take drugs?
- Stimulants- Increase heart rate and blood pressure and are taken to improve endurance, reduce fatigue, and increase alertness
Thank You!
- Are male or female athletes more likely to take drugs?
- Are there consequences if an athlete is caught, if so what would it be?
Pro#1- Why athletes use drugs
- Today's athletes are looking for an advantage over the competition that will help them become winners
Pro#3 Dates that changed drug use
1976 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) bans the use of steroids.
1987 - The National Football League begins testing players for steroids.
Why am I interested in this topic?
1988 - Congress passed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act, which makes possession and distribution of nonprescription anabolic steroids for non-medical purposes a crime.
1990 - Congress strengthens the 1988 law by classifying anabolic steroids as a controlled substance.
- Athletes might use drugs for various reasons, like performance enhancement, to self-treat otherwise untreated mental illness, and to deal with stressors, such as pressure to perform, injuries, physical pain, and retirement from sport
1999 - The IOC creates the World Anti-Doping Agency.
2000 - The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is established.
2003 - Major League Baseball institutes its first steroid policy, which is criticized for being too lenient.
- I am interested in this topic because I love sports and many other people do too
- I want to learn more about the different kind of drugs athletes use
Con#2 Negative effects of Drugs
March 30, 2006 - Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig announces an investigation of steroid use among pro baseball players. Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell will lead the investigation.
- Androstenedione- Some risks are acne, decrease in sperm production, shrinking of the testicles, and masculinization in women
- Human Growth Hormone- Risks include fluid retention, and cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart, muscle, and joint pain.)
- Drug abuse in the athlete population may involve doping in an effort to gain a competitive advantage
- Erythropoietin- This drug is extremely dangerous and can cause death, strokes, and heart attacks. Taking this drug can lead to dehydration, exhaustion, heat stroke, and heart arrhythmias
- Creatine- Side effects of this drug include stomach and muscle cramps, nausea, weight gain, and high-doses of liver and kidney damage
- Stimulants- The consequences of this drug include stroke, dehydration, convulsions, heart attack, and heart palpitations
Negative effects on women
Women who take anabolic steroids may:
- Grow excessive face and body hair
- Experience menstrual irregularities
Con#3 Negative effects of steroids
- Have an enlarged clitoris
When you take steroids you are at a higher risk of getting:
- Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture
- Increased low-density lipoprotein ( LDL) cholesterol
What I already know
- Decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
- I know that some athletes use steroids to increase their muscle mass and strength
Negative effects on men
Men who take Anabolic steroids may:
- Have their testicles shrink
- Have decreased sperm count
