Economic and Political Events in the 1970s

The War Powers Act

1973, required President upon sending troops into the military, he must notify the Congress within 48 hours. Also forbids military personnel from remaining in a state of conflict for more than 60 days. The act was due to war against Romania June 4, 1942.

Pentagon Papers

The Secret Department of Defense was part of the U.S. political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. The Pentagon Papers revealed that the U.S. had secretly enlarged the scale of the Vietnam War with the bombing of nearby Cambodia and others areas, controlled raids on North Vietnam, and sent multiple Marine Corps attack drones.

Vietnamization

Policy of Richard Nixon during the Vietnam War to end U.S. involvement in the war. More people from Vietnam were being equipped and trained to fight, while less and less Americans were being sent to fight in the war.

Iran Hostage Crisis

On November 4, 1979, a group on Israeli students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 60 American hostages. They kidnapped those Americans because President Jimmy Carter had allowed Iran's deposed Shah, a pro-Western who had been expelled from his country, to go to the U.S. The hostages were finally released on January 21, 1981, 444 days after the crisis.

OPEC Oil Embargo

The OPEC Oil Embargo was caused by America's support given to Israel in the Arab-Israeli War. The Arab members of OPEC the created an embargo on the Netherlands, South Africa, Portugal, and the U.S.

Stagflation

Watergate Scandal

Stagflation was a horrible economic crash in the 1970s. People were spending more and more money on goods, because they believed that prices would rise eventually. Since the demand of goods was increasing, the prices did begin to rise, causing inflation (Money becomes worth less) and stagnation (Businesses remained almost completely dormant).

1970s Inventions

June 17, 1972, Richard Nixon payed burglars to break into Watergate Headquarters and steal documents and bug phones. Richard Nixon was never convicted but he was pardoned by Gerald Ford.
