Sports Development Continuum
Participation stage.
- A voluntary involvement in sport as a recreation/leisure activity
- Often participating for a social or health reason
- Involvement may be sporadic, unorganised, irregular such as a kick about in the park
- This level also includes participating regularly, but more as a friendly activity e.g. social team
Task 3. (15 mins)
Using 'mindomo' app - create a thought wall of a time somebody may be at this level - inc reasons and people involved. Can you find any programmes that encourage this level of involvement?
Performance Stage
- People playing to develop and compete
- Regular type of activity with training and progression
- Organised activity with goals and acheivements
- Reasons for activity may include a thirst for success and extrinsic rewards
Foundation Stage.
Task 4. (10 mins)
Can you think of 5 pro's and con's to this level? How might it affect the participant? What issues may arrise in this level?
- The first experience of physical activity
- Schools are the prodominent provider of foundation stage sport and physical activity
- Early learning has a major impact on you developing fundamental skills such as; movement (e.g. kicking, throwing, catching), communication, interaction, problem solving etc

Write a diary entry - try to remember where and how you might of learned some fundamental skills? Can you suggest how you may have developed them more given a change in that situation?

2. Give an example of each level in practice.
3. Can you identify pro's and con's to each level regarding the levels limitations / issues for the participant etc?
The Sports Development Continuum?
- The continuum helps us to understand the different levels of interest that people participate in sport and exercise.
- From this we can understand peoples level of involvement
- It acts as a map - where you can start your journey
Your learning outcomes.
TASK 1. (30 mins)
Write/Draw a map of all the key moments in your sporting/physical activity journey to where you are today. Try to note exactly who was involved and why you took part in that activity.
- ALL student's will be able to identify what the sports development continuum is and what purpose it serves
- ALL students will be able to explain how practical knowledge applies to some parts of the continuum
- SOME students will be able to analyse the different aspects of the continuum and its role in developing sports opportunities
